Good Entry Level SLR Camera?
I figured there will be lots of camera users on here, so was wondering what you guys think a good entry level SLR will be. This will mainly be for personal use, but may be used to shoot models in the future. Also not looking to spend a ton of money on it

take a look at the Canon Rebel line. Starts at $399 I think. The t3/t2 that Chris posted is part of that lineup.
The Rebel is probably the best entry-level dlsr that I know of.

Ya I'm leaning towards the Canon Rebel too, whereas my husband is wanting a Nikon (3100). So trying to see which is the better between the two.

Canon Rebel T1i/T2i would be good as entry-level.
An extra sent of quality lens would be good as well, the kit lens is decent but you can do better.

canon-nikon.....pc-mac.....blonde-brunette. All opinion, but mine is; Canon makes best bodies, Canon makes best glass, and even though I love and use Canon the Nikon flash system blows Canon away. Just opinion for most but to me just the facts ma'm.

I got a 3100 for my wife even though we originally were interested in DSLR's after playing with a friend's Rebel.
When we did the research it seemed the video capabilities of the 3100 were superior so we went with that, although it's been 6 months and I don't think we've ever shot a single video, we are happy with the camera. |

I would go for a budget to mid-range Nikon, make sure you get a kit lens with vibration reduction known as... VR!

I have a Canon 60D and I love, but I also just snagged a hardly used 5D MkII for a great price. The 60D is pretty much the top of the line, for consumer level DSLR.
I mostly take photos of my kids and use them both for filming. |

Im not a nikon guy but have been looking into them recently. I think I heard people had some issues with the 3100 and auto focus, like there wasn't a motor, and if you want autofocus, you need special lenses which in the end will limit you.
The d90 is really nice, takes awesome hd video and you can get a rly nice used one here for 649 bucks. http://www.usedcameras.com/SearchRes...show=10&page=5 new ones i think are like 799 bucks this guy uses a d90 for his hd stuff, check out some of his videos. obviously hes done some post on the movies but its still a great example of what you can do. http://vimeo.com/22080133 here are some image examples full res http://www.pixel-peeper.com/cameras/?camera=1039 |

The only thing coming close to the Canon line as far as video is concerned is the Panasonic GH2. So if video is a concern go with the T2i, T3 or 60D.

Which is the Nikon that many TV shows and film directors are using in their feature length films? They say they're good enough to replace the $50k+ tanks that they use for certain shots, and are great because they can get shots they couldn't get with those huge cameras.. I think it's around $3k? D70? D7? something like that? Sorry off topic
On topic.. I have the 6.4mp Canon Rebel and it's totally fine for everything I ever do. I bet you can get one real cheap. |

I just came from a pre-production meeting for a film project I'm working on and there were no less than 5 of them hanging around the meeting/party. These folks are all serious film geeks too, so that says something about what DSLRs are capable of. Aside from the RED camera's, Sony has a line that dedicated video camera with specs better than the current crop of DSLRs. http://blog.abelcine.com/2011/03/25/...uper-35-fs100/ ![]() |
