Have you ever hit an animal whilst driving?

Went for a drive late last night and a deer ran into the road, it was dark and it happened so quick I didn't have time to avoid it.

I hope I didn't kill it

I had to do a trip to inland Australia a few years ago and let me tell you Kangaroos are not something you want to hit with your car, these fuckers are big and seem to love gathering near the roads late at night.

I also hit a small one in my town late at night near the highway, it came up over the bonnet of my car and thankfully slide of as if it went through the windscreen would not of been pretty for both of us.

I was in the passenger seat and we hit a radio collared elk in the Yukon, it was decapitated by the part in front of the door that holds the windshield.

The head punched a hole clean through the glass and hit me in the face like a football, then it fell between my legs onto the floor mat.

I did get a bunch of glass shards in my eye which I had to pick out.

Good times.

You must have grazed it or been going slow - hitting one of those can really mess you over in all kinds of ways.

I almost smacked into a female moose on a paved backroad but avoided it with a little defensive technique - my front headlight stopped at an inch of its ass. It just barely flinched and kept strutting...

Another time we ran over a dead, bloated raccoon - which is the worst mess to scrape off the entire side of the car beeuurrk.

But a cab driver I knew went to hospital when he went head-on with a deer - smashed his front end, destroyed the windshield and caved in part of his roof. Because it was on a hill it left a blood slick 20 feet long. He ended up in ditch, but I was never sure if it was the deer or the impact that hurt him - last I heard he made it out all fine though.

I was driving just after sunset on a two lane road in Florida and it had just stopped raining. I thought I saw headlights off in the distance but it quickly turned out to be the eyes of a big buck standing in the middle of the road. It was too wet to apply any hard braking so I held my breath and the Deer turned back and I missed him. If he had decided to go in my lane it would've been a direct hit at about 55mph. BTW I was in a Toyota Celica.

Another time in the same stretch of road a friend and I were driving in his Ford Pinto early in the morning before sunrise and he hit a gator that was stretched out across our lane. We actually got completely airborne but my friend kept it straight and after a quick check for damage we kept going.

When my sister got her driving permit at age 15 my Dad took her out for her first drive. They came back and my Sister was crying hysterically. " What happened " I asked and my Dad said " we were driving along and all of a sudden a cat ran out in front of the car followed by five or six little kittens. She hit the mom with a big thud and then we heard a bump...bump bump..bump..bump and she got them all. "

I hit a kangaroo in my 1995 BMW 318i, a solid car by any measure. I was doing about 80km per hour.

The entire front left hand side was dented, there was a 7 inch deep dint in the bonnet, the oil guards underneath the engine were torn off, the front left light was impacted inches into the engine compartment, the radiator was damaged severely, the front was so pushed in that the fan and the radiator melded as the radiator was pushed back into the engine compartment. The car was written off by the insurance company.

The kangaroo hopped off into the night.

I hit a squirrel a few years ago--it ran out in front of me and I didn't have time to brake. I stopped and checked my rear view mirror, and watched as the poor squirrel lay twitching in the road, two crows ran up and started pecking at it.

Yesterday morning I almost hit a grey squirrel... It just appeared in the road from nowhere, and I instinctively swerved the car.

Instantly I realised I was going to hit a bollard, so I swerved back onto the road (Fuck the squirrel - I aint crashing for it) but it must have passed safely under the car, cause I saw it scurrying off in my rear view mirror as I continued on my way

1 deer (lived and ran way), a few squirrels and birds.

On mountain roads width no guard rails you don't swerve away from small game or you can go over the side of the road.

Yeah I hit a deer when I was in high school. I lived way up north, it was night, snowy and not very good visibility. Damn thing jumped right in front of my car and I hit it at about 30mph. Screwed up my car and the deer hobbled away and collapsed in a ditch. The guy behind me asked me if he could keep the deer and I said yes. The whole experienced bummed me out pretty bad.

I've hit a lot of animals. 5 or 6 deer, a fox, a badger, a woodchuck, but the worst are the countless fucking raccoons. As soon as I get the car fixed from one, I hit another. And another. And another. I've stopped getting the car repaired, it doesn't pay.

Sadly, chances are almost 100% that the deer you hit will die. The amount of energy transferred into their body from a 3000 lb car going at almost any common speed moves like a shock wave thru their body crushing cells.

If it's any comfort the shock chemicals and endorphins will mean the deer feels very little, if he is lucky.

And there is always the chance of a glancing blow so far from organs or bones that it recovers from it with only severe bruising.
