Netflix raises their prices

I got an email today saying that my 1 DVD at a time plus unlimited streaming subscription is going from $8.99 per month to $15.98 per month. I wonder if it will hurt their subscriptions. It is still a great deal to me.

That's a big percent increase, but in terms of raw dollars, it's not too bad. I agree that it's still a good deal. I wonder if it's because of their bandwidth. I think I read somewhere that Netflix accounts for the most bandwidth in the States or something.

The music and movie-industry is trying to bring the times back when you still bought a CD or a DVD in the stores.
Whenever these good streaming-services comes up they're always unhappy with the result even when they make pirates pay for the stuff.

I was using Spotify and where OK with advertisement between the songs but the music-industry complained about the profits and the free advertisement-accounts where deleted so here I am downloading all stuff again. Fuck them.

I can't afford to have the price of a service I'm not subscribed to raised ... (for CurrentlySober).

According to people posting on their FB page everyone is canceling and going over to Hulu Plus.

I'm brand new just signed up a month ago, so I think it's shitty news, and their selection online needs to be stocked up

That's almost a doubling, which will make people unhappy.

As was said, it's still a pretty good deal but everyone knew this would happen. Netflix is sort of a pyramid scheme, not that it's a scam, but once there are no more new members, you need to find some other way to keep the profits going up. So price hikes are going to be the norm.

There is sort of a dilemma with Netflix though, they have to pay a licensing fees for those movies they stream, so if they increase the amount of movies they stream or stream newer releases, their costs go up, but they don't really attract any new customers, they just make their current customers happy.

Of course, you know the movie companies are going to pressure Netflix any chance they get to raise the licensing fees, especially if they start working as a group.

Netflix is obviously in a great position, but they have a few bumps to overcome.

It is still a solid value even if they charged $19.99 or $29.99 I would still pay it.

I watch a lot of the new releases, older stuff and TV shows from NetFlix so I get the value for my money regardless of their price and will continue using them.

Yeah, my plan just went from $19.99 to $23.99 (3 DVDs/unlimited streaming). In Dec 2010, it was $16.99. With tax, it'll be over $25 bucks a month now. I imagine a lot of people will start canceling or switching to Hulu. Still a small price for the convenience I think.

Same here. I don't have any email from them and I'm on that same plan. If they do raise the rates then I might drop them. I've been using Red Box and TV on Demand for most movies. Netflix doesn't get new releases till a month later, I can see it the day it comes out on TV on Demand. They also need to add more movies to the streaming choice.

Netflix and Hulu suck for MOVIES to watch instantly.

If NetFlix would allow more watch instantly movies then I could see a price raise - but the watch instant movie choices are shit!

I think its $7.99 for Streaming membership and $7.99 for DVD membership so $16 together but for people who dont use the DVD option (many) its still the same price. I doubt they lose many customers over this.

I just got the notice, also if you log into your account and look into your billing plan, there is a notice at the top telling of the change. The increase won't take effect till your first billing cycle after Sept 1st.

Dam, Just looked in my account page and yep, next month I have to pay $15.95. Might have to rethink NetFlix. How much is Hulu a month?

I would pay $50 a month for that service. Stop complaining, it's an online business selling digital rights. Should these businesses all be free?

NETFLIX is trying to get their users off having DVD's delivered. Their goal is licensing all the movies and being able to stream them (obviously this will take some time)

As for HULU - their licensing agreements are HORRIBLE

I signed up for Hulu Plus with the Xbox just to find out that if you want to watch pretty much anything, you can only use your computer. They are far behind the line with their licensing agreements -

I don't understand why anyone uses any Netflix or Hulu at any price. I doubt I would even bother signing up if they gave it away for free for crying out loud! I have DirecTV and receive 100+ channels in beautiful HD on the free HD DVR that supply me that I can watch on my 52" LCD HDTV including pretty much all of the movie channels except for Cinemax. I have season passes set for my few dozen favorite tv shows that I like from dramas, reality shows, comedies, sports (MMA) and documentary series and also watch a lot of movies on HBO, Showtime, Encore and Starz.

All of these come over the airwaves from the free antenna on my rooftop in very high quality resolution. The last thing I would want to do is pay to stream or download the same tv shows that cable or satelllite delivers in some compressed format while bogging down my own broadband connection at the same time. The whole idea of watching tv through the internet seems clunky to me, at least at this point in time. It's different if it's some rare footage like something on Youtube, but a professionally shot tv show, I don't understand why I would want the hassle and slowness or dealing with internet streaming even at so-called high quality when I can press a couple of buttons and have the pre-recorded program pop up on my DVR when I come home from working.

Price, convenience, less clutter (one less box if you have a PS3). Also available via iphone. Its 2 different products, so I wouldnt compare apples to apples.

If Sugar DVD and Wanted List maintain DVD rental subscription prices, this should be a good thing, as customers will see more value in renting porn.

i just go the email haha

i use it because i don't spend much time at home so i don't have cable, so netflix is a good substitute. go instant or have a movie laying around. i'm on the 3 blu ray unlimited streaming whatever so i wonder how much that will be now

Most of their streaming shit is available free with Amazon Prime.

So, if you decide to go for the 'StarzPlay', which is $5/mo - that's $60/yr.

If you go Amazon Prime, you get all of this free, and second day shipping for $79/yr. So, for an extra $19/yr, I get the same shit, and 2nd day shipping via Amazon.

I know what I'm doing.

When Netflix originally struck their deal with Starz with the online streaming, they got it cheap. WAY cheap. Starz figured this out after the deal was cut, and I think it was a 5 year contract, and Netflix knows then that's up Starz ain't gonna give it away anymore. I think Netflix is upping the ante over time cause they know when the contact is up, they're gonna have to really jack up prices -- or instant streaming is going away.

Of course they are. Streaming is the future. Too bad for the DVD renters. Go use Redbox. Netflix needs more money for more streaming content. The complainers don't seem to get that. Now those DVD renters that don't cancel will bring in more money for streaming and the ones that do cancel will save Netflix money because they'll need to buy fewer DVDs and ship fewer DVDs. Those savings can be used for obtaining streaming content.

I think Netflix is upping the ante over time cause they know when the contact is up, they're gonna have to really jack up prices -- or instant streaming is going away.
Yep Netflix got it's deal with Starz for $30 mil. A new deal with Starz will be in the range of $300 mil.

True it's like ALL of the good movies can't be viewed....I'd be willing to go from 8 bucks a month to 20 if I could just watch what the FUCK I wanted to watch...

Do you realize that DirecTV (and I think cable too) use MPEG-4 compression ? Netflix online is not any worse in quality on good broadband connection, especially their newly encoded HD films.

simple math question. $9 a month to $16 a month is a sizable increase, enough that their net income after admin costs more than doubles. they could lose half of their subscribers and still be in as good a position.

with no real competition in the field worth mentioning, they can get away with raising their prices.

Yep, I'm sure when they ran the numbers and assumed a worst case scenario of instantly losing 10-15% of subscribers with this increase, their revenue will still jump up and their net profit margin will definitely go up. As Eric said though, I'm sure this is a step to make sure their revenue is where it needs to be with the expected steeper licensing expenses approaching.
