July 21st - Sad day for America

Tomorrow when the space shuttle lands Mission Control in Houston will close. The generations of dedicated people who helped make America a great country will be laid off.
For the foreseeable future what will remain of our astronaut corp will be hitching a ride into space with the Russians.

Change isn't all it's cracked up to be.

USA Today had a huge article about the employees. Some of them will move into the new program. Even though it's just starting, they need bodies now. The poor guy who drove the truck that carried the space shuttle... No clue what he's gonna do.

I always watched the launches and the landings. I've always been amazed by the space shuttle. On one hand I'm wondering why we are spending so much money to go into outer space when our governments are broke. On the other hand, it is a sad day for America.

It's kind of interesting to look at all of the everyday products that came from the space program. Some are obvious, like GPS and live CNN coverage from around the world, but many others you would never think of, like high efficiency insulation used in houses and cars.

The apathy of most of you in this thread is telling. NASA got so good at it, it is now just taken for granted. How many other countries have successfully put men into space. The space program was something for Americans to be proud of. It inspired millions of young people to work hard and learn and with some luck actually be a part of something incredible.

The fellow who said failed... Wake up and smell the coffee. Mars landings,asteroid interceptions spacecraft that will roam the universe until the end of time.

Is it over because of Obama? No, it's over because of Bush,Clinton,Obama and scores of leaders who lost the ability to be inspired by technological triumphs.

The private sector will be fine to launch weather satellites. The resources it will take to explore the galaxy is far beyond any corporation.

That's right....We shot Bin Laden..That is what you want the US to be known for?

as a country, the US has squandered more money in the last ten years then most countries GDP for 100's of years..

if we spent 1 tenth of what the US has spent on wars in the last 10 years, we would be able to fund our space program for decades...

its no wonder that the US is quickly falling behind in education and that will eventually lead to a standstill in technological breakthroughs in the future..

we need to stop blaming our leaders and start blaming ourselves for doing nothing but sit back and watch this country decline..

100 years from now our future generations will look back at us and wonder how we could let such a great country become a shithole...

i keep waiting for the straw to break the camels back, but it seems that americans are too worried about what is going on today and not thinking about the consequences of our actions and how our future generations are going to suffer because of the decisions we are making...

why tie manned spaceflight into the greatness of america. NASA continues to conduct extraordinary research without manned space flights. like shooting a vehicle into a comet. Mars rovers. Hubble telescope.

just imo but we dont need men in space to continue learning about the universe. Our absence is 99% symbolic. its way too expensive for Man to be in space, way too easy for them to die, & theres almost nothing to do up there that machines cant do just as well.

in closing. china will appear to be taking the space lead from us. But they cut corners in many facets in life & that philosophy is guaranteed to generate a space disaster. How will they look then?

I'm sure the space program will bounce back one day soon. Maybe as someone said manned spaceflight isn't the most cost-effective way to go. We'll put more into robotics, and by 2050 we should have full colonies of mechs throughout the solar system, mining and exploring and working diligently for humankind, all fully under our control of course.

I'm sure they won't unite, rise up and attack us.

it is sad, but space is just to large to explore with the limitations of being human and not having a vessel that can travel at the speed of light.

although it saddens me, I am a bit thankful that they are not going to continue pouring tax payer money into this

How has learning anything about the atmosphere on the moon changed your daily living?

Spend the billions or trillions of dollars on more important and everyday relevant issues like Cancer & AIDS research, education, hunger, the homeless... anything except space! Waste of time and money in my opinion.

For the idiots saying nasa was a waste of money. Here are just 15 things we have gained from the space program. There are literally 15,000 products that are used in our world today because of it.
