Too much car for an 18 year old?

My son turns 18 in October and yesterday I bought him a V6 Mustang Convertible.

Now I'm having second thoughts. Too much?

He doesn't know I've bought it and has no idea he's getting wheels.

Here's a cell phone pic I took of the car.

I had a V-8 when I was 16. If he gets pissed about the 6 vs an 8 it means you have spoiled him and should take it back.

Willing to bet it is Europeans that say it is too much.

It's a good looking car which is all a kid that age cares about. Stock Mustangs (even V8's) are wimps as far as horse power is concerned so you don't have to worry about him street racing.

That's exactly what I'm looking to buy my kid, although I've got a few more years of waiting.

It depends on the kid really. Most kids will tear up their first new car. I physically ran two cars into the ground, and totaled two others before I was 18. Yet my best friend in high school had a beautiful Firebird, treated it like a baby, and never had a problem - or a traffic ticket.

If your kid is responsible, then great. If not, buy him (her) a beater until they figure it out.

I learned to drive on a car exactly like this one:

http://www.allpar.com/cars/dodge/wayfarer.html

Same color even.

Had only 19K miles, a radio, a heater, a defroster, a heater under the back seat and Fluid Drive, which meant that it shifted like a regular three on the tree but you could pull up to a stoplight and not depress the clutch, then take off by just pushing down on the gas.

http://www.allpar.com/cars/dodge/wayfarer.html

Another view but different color:

HUGE back seat.............................................. ........

No, they can still get their license at 16 (IN and CA for sure). Some kids are in no hurry. Mine weren't. Blew my mind. I was at the DMV on my 16th birthday.

I dont know your son so i cant give you an honest opinion, but i wouldn't think you'd buy him a car that he may get in trouble with if you didn't think he could handle the responsibility.

Congrats on being able to reward your son so generously.

It's a V6 and at that weight, i wouldn't at all say that's too much. I have driven one of those, it's hardly that much power that it makes you want to drive it crazy. If he's going to drive like an idiot in that car, he'd drive like an idiot in any car.

Honestly? It's a good choice if he's a responsible lad. Decent on fuel and lots of horsepower. It still has more than any stock v8 ford has produced for the mustang in previous generations.

Real nice car.

You must of thought it was perfect for him when you seen it or you wouldn't of got it.

Good choice in my opinion....

I'd have went with an SUV. Safer in an accident (because it's heavier), handles like shit so he wont be tempted to go fast, and generally slower.

I don't get why parents give their kids cars in the first place so I am probably the last person that should say anything... but I have to pass this on... I grew up around some very privileged absolutely affluent people and old money wisdom was you never did stuff like buy your kids cars. (Must just be a WASPY Connecticut thing or something... I don't know...)

Good luck with it.

Depends on the type of person your son is. I'd honestly say yes, not only did you buy him a sports car, but you bought him a sports car with less safety than the hard top. Regardless of the fact that it's a v6, it's still a remotely fast car and chances are he will wreck it. On the flip side of the coin, It'd definitely increase his chances of getting laid and increase his popularity at school. Always good to be the cool Dad. I'd go with what baddog said, if he bitches about not having the v8 he definitely isn't ready for the car.

And that's why I bought a jeep wrangler. Lol
Put some bigger tires on it and thats it. Slower then hell but keeps me out of trouble...somewhat.

Keep it yours for a year or two and let him drive something else, imo it is too much for him at that age, no matter how good of a driver he is.

Make him wait for something, make dreams and fantasies.

Get him started with a little cheaper, used car but tempt him, tell him that if he drives responsibly and takes good care of that car, in 6 months or something, the two of you will go buy a completely brand new car (like the one you now have) for him. Or set a certain goal, that if he achieves certain grades in school, or does this and that, he will get an upgrade of his car.

The exitment of going together, looking, reading up on stuff, going home and dreaming of what is yet to come is a part of life. I think you are starting him out too large, how is he possibly going to be able to top this later on in his life? Some of the fun is going together with dad, looking at cars, weighing pros and cons, the realization that you can't have everything, like sacrificing trunk space in exchange for a cool convertible. Those are important lessons of life, and I think you have an excellent chance of being able to join him on that trip.

No, let him travel upwards alongside with you, by starting with a little lesser car. Then start looking at new cars in three months or so, and then after another 3 or 4 months, go buy it together. It's fun to do stuff with ones parents, don't take that away from him by having everything served on a platter for him, because that is probably not how life will be for him in a few years.

Take every chance you get on doing stuff together with your son! Share his dream and be part of his life, dreams and hopes, yu have an excellent chance starting with this.

Good luck!

Make the car come with with a list of responsibilities for the kid.
He fucks up, you take it back.

As for the car, I wish my folks even got me one.
It's a nice ride and make sure to have your kid take good care of it.

I'd go with what baddog said, if he bitches about not having the v8 he definitely isn't ready for the car.

Definitely don't give him an S.U.V
It's not exactly impossible to roll a mustang, and he'll be even more fucked in that cabrio...
While it is possible and easier to flip an SUV, the fact it's slower and handles like shit makes you avoid going too fast and doing something stupid

Take the engine out and give him that part for Xmas? That way he has a few months to get used to it, before he can hurt himself

Its a nice car. My fear would be the lack of a top. Make him earn it though.
