When I tried to figure out what service I was going to join, what came to mind was where they are stationed, Marines and Army play in the mud alot, Air Force bases are always in some desert and the coast guard doesn't go anywhere, I ended up home ported in Hawaii

Right at the time it was crossing my mine was just when things were starting to act up in the first Gulf War. My uncle thought it had the potential to be another Vietnam cluster fuck and urged me not to enlist. I'm glad I didn't looking back, but there was a period of a few months where I was very close. Ditto. At the O-6 level politics and image are very important and this is that kind of stuff that can screw up a career. I was with 2/18th F.A. attached to the 18th Airborne during desert storm and we had an O-5 whose wife's public antics, with his name attached, got him in all kinds of shit, and he was never able to pass a promotion board afterwards. He ended up RIFing out 4 years later, still an O-5
