New iMac 27" i7

decided to buy my first mac so i went to the apple store in scottsdale and got the iMac 27" i7. took it home, got it all set up and ran it for an hour and everything was working great. left the room to watch the ball game and when i came back it was in sleep mode. no matter what i do i can't wake it up. the hard drive is running but black screen.

anyone else have this problem? i bought a mac to avoid stuff like this. not a good first impression.

You push the power button and a Mac comes out of sleep mode.

Not really that difficult.

One of ours had a similar issue this earlier, and this was my response as well.

Waking up from from sleep mode been an issue on Macs for ages. It can be touchy. A quick click of the power button is most reliable.

it was just under $2,800. nice machines, this one must have been a lemon.

i was on the phone with the apple tech for literally 5 mins when he said return it for replacement.

got the new one set up and so far so good. my Dell takes forever to render HD videos so i'm hoping this will speed things up.

just starting to get use to the huge monitor. at first i felt like i was at the theater in the front row.

You could have bought 2 i7 PC's for that price... each with 27" monitors

you bought a mac because you wanted faster rendering?
lol, all you needed to do was upgrade to a machine that is properly configured for rendering.

its not a mac vs dell issue
its a new computer (thus newer/faster hardware) vs older computer (thus last generation)

for $2800 you could build a way faster computer than that mac, which you pay for the name on and they have 70% profit margin on (yes, apple tries to maintain a 70% profit margin on all their products)

you didn't take it back for a replacement, u just realised you had to push the power button to take it out of sleep.

qft, I could put together a SWEET rendering machine off of just ordering parts from Newegg for half that price and still all the same power.

Congrats on your iMac27" purchases. We have several of them here.

What you want to do first is go to your energy saver settings and configure it the way you want.

You can put your machine to sleep by pressing the power button behind the unit quickly. You can also wake your machine up the same way.

You can also wake your machine up by pressing any key or clicking your mouse as long as they are paired properly to your computer.

cool, thanks for the sleep tips. i'm not sure what happened to the first one but it wouldn't wake up no matter what we did. it would boot up but had a black screen.

Say what you want about Mac, but my Macbook Pro with i7 8GB RAM is the first machine I have that I am still excited about 7 months after purchase. Great stuff! There is only one thing that bothers me. When I restart it, sometimes it takes "forever". At most i waited 5 minutes from I pressed On until I was logged in and ready to use it. Not good. But then again, how often do you restart a Mac...

not a programer, and not bitter at all. very happy with the boxes I have, as a matter of fact if it weren't for content production I would get a $400 netbook and be done with it... only use pc's for work and email. could get by on a pad pretty sure if it wasn't for work

i'm the same way, but when you buy quality parts for pc they will outlast and outperform apple, that's the bottom line...

A coffee machine is just a coffee machine.
My $25 machine is just as good as your $179 machine.

A computer is also just a computer.
An i7 with Microsoft is the same as an i7 with MacOS.
A 27" monitor you buy separately is the same as the 27" monitor that is forced on you.

There is no difference in the hardware.
The only difference is in the operating system, and I've never, ever, had any issues running Windows.

The problem is the user, and MacOS just restricts and limits you more than Windows, thus you have less of a chance of doing things to slow it down, over time.

interesting thoughts... and the closed API of a mac doesn't hurt as welll as no legacy aspect
