For $1000 you should easily be able to get something with a second gen i7, nice big 17in screen, high end graphics, etc.
I just picked up an Asus G74sx laptop for $1300 at Best Buy and I LOVE it. I'm sure I could have found it a couple hundred cheaper online somewhere. http://www.asus.com/Notebooks/Gaming_Powerhouse/G74SX/ |

I hate laptops. I have three of them piled in the corner. When my dog was a puppy (a few months ago) he ate half the keys off my Dell Inspiron 1756 - or whatever the hell it is.
He also ate a BlackBerry. As it turns out, the dog is a genius... I have another Dell with a 15 inch screen that I told my daughter to take with her. She uses it for college. And there's a Toshiba gathering dust, and something else that's fairly new that quit working to my satisfaction a couple years ago. Haven't used any of them in about two years. Untril I find someone who can build laptops - and Dell, Toshiba, HP, etc., can't - as well as my buddy Mark can build desktops, I'm not buying another one. Laptops are shit, and I'm sick of friends and acquaintances asking me to fix theirs. All laptops are shit - even your fancy Apple pieces of shit are, well, shit a year after you buy them. The "laptop" computer is rapidly becoming pointless. Because they're all fragile pieces of shit. |

An SSD would be sweet and make it a monster.

A couple hundred over your budget, but this is about as good as it gets. Only thing missing is a full 1080p screen.
Killer Laptop

I have always hated using laptops... until I got a Macbook Pro... yes they are underpowered for the price.. but the build quality is unsurpassed.
I upgraded mine shortly after purchasing to 8GB of RAM and a SSD and it flys. It's a pleasure to use.
