There really isnt anything else reliable, to be honest.

Myself, I am on the hunt for a list of blog directories, any that are noteworthy?

You can try hitting up webmasters individually and adding some type of link monitoring software. There's no need for a third party service really. All it does is cause problems when it finally goes down or the owner's head gets too big and they start wanting to charge $100 a month.

The real problem is that many webmasters have left the industry and their sites are on autopilot.

the thing is, even if they started charging, 100 bux is a joke really. Worth it.

I just worry about losing track of all the trades in case the ship ever did sink. I think that's why it's extremely important to keep a list on your computer of every trade you do, the webmaster's email and what he linked to you in return with.

It's a good idea to keep your own list. Ideally you would expect there to be some kind of export function to make that easier. I disagree about the $100 a month. Many would stop using it and then you'd have less link partners. Eventually it wouldn't be worth the $100 to you either.

These remarks always crack me up. No offense to the O.P., quoted out of convenience.

You want something of value to you (linking system for trades), but YOU do not want to pay for it. You also want it to work 100% of the time, have back ups for the site/trades provided so that no data is lost, and have added functionality (export, etc.) or other things added and developed over time.

Who should pay for all of this exactly? The LinkSpun guy? Just because he is a champ??

Do YOU like working for free? You expect your visitors to pay for the service YOU provide. Last I knew, most people's time was worth something. Which does not even get into the fact of hosting, programming, and other costs associated with keeping a site online in the first place.

Frankly, it reeks of a hobbyist mentality.

I would be willing to pay a $10-20 fee/monthly for Link Spun, it's a great service and makes trading so much easier. Although sometimes the site can be a little slow.

linkspun

Linkspun is perfect. Got 70 trades in few days. Manually, it wouldn't ever happen. After I saw how link trade service is working, I've finally understood why I never liked manual linking and writing to webmasters. It is just problem that there are no so many sites in my niche.

I concede your point about that $100/mo. dollar amount.

However, I believe that any user of the system should be willing/able to pay for upkeep and development of the site or system. Whether it's $10-20.00/mo. you should be able to afford it as a webmaster, or you are in the wrong business.

Thats not a point I would concede.. I make more than 100 a month from using it so I would be happy to pay that.

Cost of doing business.

$10 - $20 is acceptable but it would almost surely have the effect that less people would use it diminishing the value of the product. Some might argue that all these people who won't pay are bums and have bad sites so who cares but that's not necessarily true.

Well, I am trying to put my original point in perspective. Which is you should PAY for something of value or importance, which LinkSpun provides, to your business. If you can't afford to pay a few bucks for a value add to your business. You are in the wrong business.

You spend all of this time developing trades, and expect some FREE service to be doing development, back ups, solid hosting and all of the rest when it's mission critical to your business is fucking insane.

The monthly dollar amount is a completely separate discussion.

Just because there are more trades available from freeloader bums, does not mean that they are quality trades in the first place.

You need to rethink the penny-wise, dollar foolish mindset.
