Credit unions add 650K members/$4.5 billion ahead of 'Bank Transfer Day'

Those are pretty impressive numbers. I wonder how much larger it will grow tomorrow on official "Bank Transfer Day"?

Quote:
If money talks, how loudly does $4.5 billion speak? That's the amount added in deposits at the nation's credit unions since Sept. 29, estimates the Credit Union National Association. The organization says at least 650,000 people have opened new accounts, bringing those billions of dollars with them.

That figure doesn't even include the thousands of dollars more brought by Frank Sheldon, 63, who runs a photography studio in Seattle. He closed two accounts at Chase and moved to Boeing Employees Credit Union, now BECU -- open to everyone, not just Boeing staff -- in early September.

Sheldon's bank transfer journey actually started in 2008, when his original financial institution, Washington Mutual, was sold to J.P. Morgan Chase (JPM). After the sale, he saw his credit lines cut, which caused his credit score to dip because it gave him a higher debt-to-credit ratio. Then came the fees. His previously fee-free joint checking account and business account picked up $10 a month and $15 a month fees, respectively.

Been using a credit union here since I was 7. Had a BoA account in Az, but hated the fees and rude tellers, so closed it shortly after opening it. Credit union for the win!

Tip: The First Gospel Church Credit Union is not the place to use :P

Being a bit facetious here. I use a regional federally chartered bank and have had good luck with them.

"In 2009, major banks controlled 45 percent of checking account business, according to Mike Moebs, an analyst whose firm, Moebs Services, has been gathering publicly available data on banks for 28 years. He estimates that by the middle of 2012 at the latest, the big banks' share of that market will have fallen to a third, representing a loss of millions of customers and billions of dollars."

Only BIG problem with all this is that the 5th falls on a Saturday, dunno about every state but in Michigan MOST banks are closed on Saturday sans Drive up service till 1pm

Not too sure if you can close an account via drive up window.

I closed my Wells Fargo account a few months ago, and the 21 year old guy they had working the account desk was seriously convinced that WF had lost so much money due to new regulations that they were about to go under. A few days later, their earnings came out.

Unless you deal in cash, not sure why anyone needs a local brick & mortar. USAA and Charles Schwab offer checking accounts with more features than just about every single bank and with no fees at all. Seriously, you can pull out money at a strip club and they'll refund the $15 fee. And of course, depositing from your phone kicks ass.

I checked out Ally Bank too, I'm looking into USAA too (since I can get it). Really those ATM fees add up, along with other fees.

$4.5B is peanuts, but I'm glad to see it either way. Always good to support your community.

Sure, but is that drive up service only OR inside teller service as well?

Around here it's drive up only 9am - 1pm on Saturdays, that's what I was saying.

Morons watch too many movies and didn't think to look at a calender would be my guess..

I'm pretty sure it's because of this movie which seems to be a cult classic for anyone whom protests anything these days. It's why you see all those stupid masks at all the protests.

There are many different credit unions. Just because the one declined you doesn't mean another will.

I tried a few different banks over the years and got sick of them. I was with Washington Mutual early in my adult career and they started holding my checks because they thought since they were from an adult company that they were going to bounce. I ended up leaving them and going to a credit union and have been their since.

I thought only Corpus Christi was that backwards.
Glad to be back in KC, bank here is open 7 days a week. Short hours on holidays, such as Christmas.
