I used to write for one of the most popular satire sites on the internet. Nothing on the site was true yet there were constant emails from mental midgets who found the articles via forum posts from other outraged idiots. It was sad and hilarious all at the same time.

Back then I made the suggestion that we should be posting all of the hate mail on the site so those that "got it" could laugh at the idiots too. To the best of my knowledge they've never posted the reader hate mail.

Theo, you are correct that article caused a stir - it was all over twitter. I imagine most people just skimmed it, saw that it was a "standard" opinion, and then went on without really getting into it.

Satire is harder when you are a venue not known for satire, when you are effectively the voice of an industry, and when the base story is all over the mainstream press.

Probably people expected a reasoned answer, not satire.

I don't know if it would be classified as a satire, parody, spoof, or just pure crap, but I know that I had a great time writing about Saul Darkham, the King Of Porn. The problem was, and I don't want to mention any names or anything, but the problem was that I based the character on an apparently real person who really just says the same thing over and over again, which I felt kind of limited my options as to where I could go with the character. With that being said, i think it set me up well to introduce a new fictional character which I've been toying around with in my spare time and one who does not have that same problem. This new character, if described in a nutshell, would be best described as kind of like a combination of Patrick Bateman, Mike South, Edmund Dantes, and myself. He is Count Chatsworth. Look out for him in Spring 2012. Or after.

I like to think that I'm at least somewhat intelligent, but I'm afraid I can't speak intelligently about the thought process Sasha Grey goes through when deciding to do some charitable work. Neither can you.

Maybe she did it for the publicity, maybe she didn't. It really doesn't matter. Many charitable deeds are done for self serving purposes.

If anyone has a problem with people who donate time or money to charitable causes for self serving purposes,they should write their congressperson and ask them to initiate legislation to eliminate tax deductions for charitable donations. Sure, the net result might be that less money is donated to charity, but it's not about the charities themselves, it's about what's inside the head of the charitable worker.

You should also put me on your shit list because I once helped build a house for about 18 hours on a weekend simply because I wanted to fuck the girl who asked me if I would do it with her. It doesn't get anymore self serving than that and despite the fact that my deciding to do it right at the last minute helped alleviate the fact that 3 people failed to show, I am just a selfish, selfish cunt. I'm certainly aware of the PR benefits but that doesn't matter. There are many ways for celebrities to get attention from TMZ. Obviously the 'leak a sex tape' option is no longer on the table for Sasha Grey, but there are other options, so what's wrong with choosing an option that will also help people? And it's not like she read to kids in Orange County. She actually chose to do it in a city with literacy issues.

Interesting discussion here that sparked my interest in re-visiting the history and definition of "satire". Wikipedia (this time appearing to be accurate) has this to say about it:

I like to think I have a pretty good grasp of the English language and can detect sarcasm or satire as easy as white lining up the 101. Something I have noticed in most good satire is that it will cause a chuckle at some point.

That being said, even though I scanned this thread enough to know it was meant as satire before I read the article, I missed the satire.To be honest, if I had just come across it I would say it was an editorial opinion. No reason to get fired about it, but if this is satire it was not done very well.

I just checked out the thread, think it's a great cause, I commend you for taking the initiative to help organize everything, but want to ask you one question.

Before you started the thread, were you aware of how it could potentially have a positive effect on your business?

It has 41 posts and 562 views over the course of 48 hours, you are post #1, you did not use a fake user name, and your sig promotes your program so it's not inconceivable to think that someone could potentially see your post and sign up as an affiliate because the post led them to believe that you're a stand up guy and therefore run a stand up program. Even if they don't sign up, I imagine that most non-cunts would at least click the link to check out your program.

However, just as I can't speak to what goes on in Sasha Grey's mind when she decides to do charity I can't speak to what your thought process was in deciding to organize the effort. I imagine that you were at least somewhat cognizant of how it could potentially benefit your business, but neither I nor anybody can really know how important of a factor it played in your decision. You might not even know. Maybe all the pieces came together so quickly and you just knew that you liked the whole idea while only subconsciously realizing that the GFY thread component of the plan could be of personal benefit. Not only do I not know what went into your thought process, I don't care what went into your thought process because at the end of the day, you'll end up supplying 50 families with christmas gifts and that's a good thing.

A couple days ago I noticed that Sabrina Deep dedicated her XBIZ nomination to Raven Alexis. Not the award, just the nomination, and the press release was not being sent for the sake of raising money so there wasn't really a charitable need for publicity. But I still think it was a class act on her part. Now, if all of the approximately 19,356 XBIZ award nominees followed suit and did the same, they'd certainly leave themselves open to criticism, but Sabrina thought of the idea first, it struck me as being a kind gesture, and if she gets good publicity for having done so, more power to her.

You have to understand that the playing field for Sasha Grey or for Vivid is way different than the playing field for you, or for me, or for Sabrina Deep and that when something they do gets picked up by a website like TMZ, it's no different than when someone bumps your thread on GFY, or when XBIZ publishes Sabrina's press release, or me getting a blow job from some random chic after working my ass off all weekend on Staten Fucking Island.

So, yeah, I imagine that Sasha Grey knew there would be publicity but, given her image and public persona, does it really seem as if it would be that far out of character for her to do it primarily for the charity of it? I don't think so. She seems intelligent, like she wants to experience new things, learn about the world and whatnot. While religious zealots who criticize the industry would view each in the same light, non-cunts who work in the industry and have at least somewhat of a clue should be able to know that Saha Grey reading to kids is different than, say, what it would have been like if Taylor Rain were to have done damage control by reading to kids shortly after telling the world what it felt like to have a bump of coke blown up her ass!

For Sasha Grey, It seems like it would fit right in with who she is as person or at least fit in with the image that she has crafted for herself publicly under the name…..of…….Sasha Grey. So she has every reason to use it as her name. I mean, aside from family and the people she grew up with, how many people even call her by her birth name anymore? Maybe DarkCrayon can make himself useful and slide down his portal into her brain, get that info for us, and report back.

Oh, and as far as the amount of publicity that one can generate via TMZ, I did some research earlier this year in an attempt to estimate both the traffic and # of non-recip linkback that Vivid gets every time they get picked up and can tell you that it is a shitload and would cause many holier-than-thou webmasters to sell themselves out 10 times over.
