Talk about a brutal hosting experience... Quadranet

Hey folks,

I don't often post in this section of the forums but thought I would share the brutal support service I am getting from the LA staff at Quadranet. I've had a server with these guys for 3 or 4 years now and found the server unresponsive Tuesday morning. I logged into my customer panel and found out that the previous evening they sent notification the hard drive failed. My alternate email was incorrect so I?ll take responsibility for the first 12 hours of downtime.

But as I write this post it is still not up and running. They offered to try cloning the drive which would cause minimal issues setting up the server again and informed me it would take about 12 hours and they had a 70% success rate. I tell them to go ahead around 6:15am on Nov 15th. Having received no response after 12 hours I inquired and told it was 70% completed.

I ended up crashing for the evening, figuring I?d have an answer in the morning and get started restoring if it had failed. I logged into the panel Nov. 16th at 4:50am and still no response so I update the trouble ticket once again. It appears it stalled at 73% but nobody had bothered to check on the progress.

So today they?ve been trying to locate a drive. The server had an IDE drive and they couldn?t locate another one to replace it with. 4 hours later they have a drive and are installing Centos only to find that they?re still having problems and it won?t boot. Another drive replacement, this time a SATA drive at 11:29am.

I?m told at 2:35 pm they?re re-racking the server and I should have access shortly. 5:00 pm still no server and no response. I am told there was an issue and everything had to be re-installed. 6:59 pm server comes back online but they didn?t install the control panel, which they say they will get installed. Another hour and a half rolls by so I ask for an update, only to find they haven?t even started installing and are asking for a client id.

Server is now down 50 hours with a bad hard drive. What a fucking joke. Here?s hoping that when I wake up in the morning it is actually online and I can begin recovering the data.

this is why you should always run some backups even if its only once a month.

Sandman.... issue isn't backups (yet, some of them are rather old) but the fact that they still haven't fixed the original problem, which was a dead drive.

Dude! You got pawned! How the hell can you not have like 30 IDE drives laying around? They could've gone down to Wal-Mart and picked up one in that length of time. Sorry you're having so many issues SP!

Not trying to be a dick here but YOU are responsible for maintaining current backups of your data. If it's valuable enough to ask your host to try and recover it for you (which may not be possible or could take a week or more - cloning a bad drive almost never works) then a daily backup solution would have been worth having.

Unless your host provides a backup solution w/ your package they are NEVER responsible for your data, you are. Hardware fails, this is a fact of life you need to plan for.

I'd get a modern server without IDE drives and add a backup solution. If you had daily backups you could have been back up and running in no time. I know people love to blame hosts and ask for all kinds of compensation in these situations but the only thing I see them doing wrong is failing to manage your expectations.

When you get your drive back, Cyberwurx.

I have been using them for about a year after several SEO'ers I know told me about them after my own hosting horror story. I made the switch and my "overloaded" server went from 3.x server load to .1x server load. I had suspected my host didn't know how to set it up correctly to run a blog network and Cyberwurx proved it after the switch.

Before I got help Mon - Fri and very hard to reach them on the weekends...

Now I get 24/7/365 and they proactively contact me if they see something is amiss...

all im saying is if you have a control panel lets say directadmin there is a feature where you can backup the whole server and ftp it somewhere doing a backup once a month makes sure you have semi recent data to restore if something goes wrong.

i have spent 2 days before trying to recover a drive i know how much of a pain in the ass it is

Thanks everyone. I woke up this morning and it's back online so I will get working on it now.

@6South - I take full responsibility for the backups and their timeliness... that isn't the issue for me. I thought that giving the cloning a shot would save me time from grabbing the backups and uploading them to the server as well as doing what I could to rescue the updates the were not in the backup. And at no time have I asked for compensation from them... it's an unmanaged server without an insurance package and it hosts my various free sites. Not something I'm going to go insane about... I'm a pretty laid back guy.

What I was incredibly frustrated with was the lack of communication by some of their staff members and what turned into a nightmare support experience for me. You'd think that changing a hard drive, installing the O/S and control panel would not involve the complications and delays that I have experienced. That's my issue with this particular experience with Quadranet.

In any case its back up and running now so today has started out much better then yesterday

You should look into getting SAS drives and getting a RAID setup at a minimal.

Definitely not fun, yet not unusual unfortunately. Even if the host did everything perfectly they have no way of knowing that the failed drive is actually a failed controller.

If you have an important server on which you need to avoid having a similar experience, Clonebox would keep your sites up while the main server is being worked on. You would have received a phone call from us when our monitoring saw that the sure was down and we would have launched the clone, so minutes down time would have been minutes rather than a day or two.

once my hosting provider deleted my VPS with 20 sites running, because of billing error... it took them a week to restore...

Sucks to hear. There are a lot of other great hosts whose reps, or even owners, post on this board. Quadranet also has lots of issues when dealing with abuse, as well so, it sounds like it's not limited to just server support.

Just thought I would post another follow-up on this particular incident.

Had the server up and running again with plans to move everything in January when things quieted down a bit and I had time to get things done. Received a warning message yesterday that the *new* hard drive that they installed failed and is unrecoverable.

Server account cancelled... setting up a new server on a new host and using my backups to get things back up and running

Fucking unbelievable. My recommendation... avoid QuadraNet at all costs!

that's a lot of broken hard drives, either you are extremely unlucky or you got screwed with old hard drives

Ask you new host to install a raid card

Move to nationalnet.com , contact them with your needs and they will make you a deal maybe you pay a bit more but they are one of the very best. No BS, fast response to support tickets and you would never go through this with them.
If I were asked "where should I host" they would be in my top 3 at least.

Dude, this really sucks, but it could be worse. Imagine you hosted with ISPrime and the tech responds to you requesting support by blocking you from access to support so you don't bother them. If you start looking for new host, know what you'd be getting if you decided to take this route. Hope your situation gets resolved soon so you get your sites back online quickly.

I had similar problems to this with my previous host, what annoyed me the most is when you are sat around waiting for hours only to find out they haven't even started on what they are supposed to be doing - it's like they don't give a crap about you as a client. If you feel that someone was busting their balls on their end to help you out then all is good, but shitty service is shitty service. I feel your pain bro.

Give nationalnet a try, they will never let you down when it comes to support and ensuring their systems run as they should

I hosted with Quadra for a few years and generally didn't have too many problems with them. Their support could be iffy sometimes (i.e a ticket being put on hold indefinitely with no answer), but 99% of the time it was great.

Sucks to see your situation. I experienced something VERY similar with one of the more reputable hosts here a few years ago and lost a big chunk of business back then. So I feel your pain.

I cancelled some servers and moved away from them about 5 months ago now.

I'm still getting notices that they are trying to bill my old expired credit card, to no avail.

Thanks for keeping me posted mate. Sorry to hear it is such a pain in the ass.

I just checked out quadranet on the WOT (web of trust) plugin for firefox. It seems it has very poor user ratings. Like i said hostgator have a good rep, and have very good ratings on WOT.
