BTW, the "administrative action" against Police Leut. John Pike is just a damage control PR stunt.

Expect more Capsicum if you attempt to take control of govt. public property!

Yeah and clearly they were "circled in" since the one cop was able to step over the line of students in order to pepper spray them.
Has it ever occurred to you that they were circled by the mob around them? No, that's too far fetched, right? Read into it what you will, in fact why don't you take your ass down there and protest with them.

What's the other side of the story? It's hard to believe they would spray them just for the fun of it. It looks like they are deliberately trying to block something. Was it private property and were they refusing to move?

I had some of that stuff come back into my face when I sprayed someone with it on a windy day. Even blowback from it is enough to put you out of commission for a good ten minutes from coughing and not being able to see through the water in your eyes.

Pepper spray isn't anywhere as bad as Tear gas. That sucked ass.

If it was China, Iran, North Korea, or 1943 Germany as these protestors are all screaming - They'd all be shot and killed.

The children were told to remove their tents.
The children were told to leave the area.
The children were told they would be arrested.
The children were told they would be pepper sprayed.

The children were pepper sprayed, the children were arrested, the children left the area in handcuffs, and the children had their tents removed. Children will be children.

The larger problem is, you should not need a permit to protest, so long as you are on public property, or your own.

I know in this case it was private property, but I'm speaking generally. Public property in any city, at any time, should be fair game for a protest.

He's right. Americans definitely always settle for law and order over chaos.

The Boston Tea Party was a shining example of law and order over chaos.

Squealer is a genius and is always right.

Anyway, back to reality. The students where all wearing jackets. It was a cool day in the mid 50's [Fahrenheit]... water would have been a lot more humane. Sitting there soaking wet from water in that temperature for too long and the protesters could look forward to a nasty cold as a result.

But using pepper spray against defiant, seated arm-lockers... THOSE OUT OF FUCKING CONTROL LAWLESS STUDENTS!!... I could see why the police felt so threatened. I am surprised with the intelligence shown by typical American police these days that the video did not show a student losing his head to a .20 gauge shotgun blast after raising up a deadly weapon in a threatening manner (holding a school book in front of him to shield against the pepper spray)

I am going to start celebrating when it heats up in America from the tension. There is a lot more on the horizon in consideration of the economy and gross misconduct of government policy makers, and the first video we see on youtube showing a cop in riot gear getting his head stomped in will be a day I have a big smile on my face.

Correct me if I am wrong, people can no longer enjoy clove cigarettes in the US because some minor (under 18) MIGHT enjoy the flavor after scoring one in violation of US laws pertaining to cigarette sales to minors? Waaaaahahaha, America is the laughing stock of the planet these days.

People are missing a lot of background info on this UC Davis situation, and making general anti-protester remarks which are off base.

The students had a scheduled, permitted, organized protest a week earlier to this at the same place, where police violently beat protesters AND teachers. People got seriously hurt.

The students were there protesting police brutality from a week earlier.

Well the people in the video surrounding the police all looked like photographers and people holding video cameras. FAR TOO DANGEROUS for even the police to go up against a well armed out of control mob like that!

Really? You are pointing to a time where there was no America and an event in a British Colony as an example of "Americans"?

The reason for rules and laws is to protect EVERYONES rights, including those who might be affected by the protest adversely.

No worries.

The First Amendment does not give you the right to break the law and do what you wish in the name of "protesting against the government" and it doesn't mean that applicable laws suddenly cease to exist.
You're good. Can you also try and argue why SOPA is good?

No, you should have a permit to protest on public property. Public property belongs to everyone, not just a small group of protesters. It has little to do with protesting and everything to do with everyone being able to use public space fairly.

For example, we have a very large park here in my hometown - football field, baseball diamonds, picnic area, play area, pool, and a public hall. On weekends parents arrive early to stake and out "occupy" picnic tables for birthday parties - There's only a dozen of them, and it's first come first serve. There should really be some kind of permit process in place so this is fair to everyone.

The local city union employees union went on strike in my hometown recently. They protested outside of city hall, which was appropriate. Every morning from 9am until noon they walked around with their signs. The city assigned a single police officer to the picketing, which was comical - because the cop just sat around drinking coffee with them. They didn't need to link arms and prevent the general public from entering city hall; They still got their message across.

Protest all you want. Just relax a little. Get your message across without stupidity.

In a way, that is kind of twisted. It's kind of like saying "We want to protest the government to complain, but we have to tell the government we plan on doing this in advance".

What twisted logic? Its the law. People need to follow the law when they do anything. No news there. Laws are there to protect everyone's rights, not just those who want to protest something.

When you look at this "john Pike" guy, it's easy to understand exactly the type of guy he is. He wears jack boots around the house, and is always strapped with his trusty Colt 1911 .45, even when he's making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich ( because his mom is tired of doing it). There's also a large cache of Guns and Ammo in his bedroom. The magazine, and the real thing.

and all of his underwear has a desert camo print.

I just saw an interview with one of the "peppered" students on CNN.

Brooke Baldwin(hottie) asked this naive young girl why she didn't get up when the police asked, and her answer was something like: "I'm lucky enough to live in a country where civil disobedience and political dissent is encouraged".

I think she may have things a little twisted. This is what happens when colleges program kids to be raging liberals. They have a giant list of things to complain about before they've even gone out into the world and tried to raise kids, or keep a roof over their heads without mommy and daddy's help. Let's see how empathetic and socially aware she is after she's spent a few years working to pay down her school and credit card debt, or get that car she likes.

I'm still a supporter of OWS, but these kids crack me up.

Most departments only allow pepper spray use in certain circumstances I believe, and this is not one of those circumstances. If it is, it shouldn't be. This ugly fat fuck should be dealt with just like if he were a regular guy who went haywire and sprayed some people. It's assault and he belongs in jail, not on leave and certainly not on the streets.

Just because they are college students does not mean they don't know the difference between right and wrong or that our politicans work for donors and not the people.

Would the message be different if it were delivered by a small business owner who is a respected member of his community? No.

You fell for an old media trick.

so if a cop told you he had to have sex with your wife while he burns your house down, you would comply ?

of course not.. because people don't comply with unlawfull orders unless they are sheep.

"The president of the University of California system said he was "appalled" at images of protesters being doused with pepper spray and plans an assessment of law enforcement procedures on all 10 campuses, as the police chief and two officers were placed on administrative leave.

"Free speech is part of the DNA of this university, and non-violent protest has long been central to our history," UC President Mark G. Yudof said in a statement Sunday in response to the spraying of students sitting passively at UC Davis. "It is a value we must protect with vigilance."

They do know the difference between right and wrong. Who suggested a college student would not?

OK, the footpath in the front of YOUR HOUSE is PUBLIC PROPERTY.

What if 50 hippies pitch 50 tents there for say... 6 months!

The police ask them to move on. THEY DON'T.

Public Property is SHARED PROPERTY - you can't pitch a tent and squat there!

Pepper spray is ideal to dissolve the situation from potential harm.

You simply can't disobey police face to face.

You can't do it on your own.

You can't do it with a few mates.

You might THINK YOU CAN DO IT in a crowd of 50 disobedients

but YOU are escalating the problem, not the police.

When police say DISPERSE it's for a reason!
