I finished high school in 1988.

If I had just one million US, I'd rent out my house, pack my backpack, buy a plane ticket and I'd be gone for years.

I don't need any more. One million US is 1.7 million AUS. That's all I need. That's all my master plan requires. I'd be free.

I would never completely retire from this industry but rather hire it out to be managed by someone else. Invest in a few other areas, something along the lines of what Snow had referred to...

Then create my dream job of finishing up some grad work, I also have some research interests that I'd love to pursue....and of course travel some when not busying enjoying my new job, whatever I decided that would be.

let's go back to this. if having friends who i've know and trusted my entire life, regardless of money - makes me in denial, i'm all for it.

i will put a gun to my head the day i am worried about being a SOMEBODY in this business LOL. who fucking cares?

one of the sorriest attitudes i've ever seen displayed on this board.

pathetic if that's truly your attitude (which looking over your posts in this thread, seems almost undeniable). also interesting how you jump from one argument to the next, as soon as you are confronted...

anyway, i still think i love ya... blah, blah ;)

I don't want to be "someone".

I'm happy with who I am.

I just want to be free.

And I don't need a fortune to do it.

My needs and wants are simple.

Sleazy, it seems your desire to be "someone" stems from your own inadequacy.

Regarding original question about what I'd do with $4M capital...

1) A portion stays safe in something low interest and liquid.

2) A portion goes towards active investing because I like the action in trading. 9% on gold already for the last month...

3) Once you have more than you need, you just do like Fletch says and make yourself happy by pursuing your interests. Move up Maslow's pyramid.

4) It's silly to think that a change in financial status doesn't have an impact on one's relationships. It doesn't have to destroy them, but it can create new kinds of conflicts. Girlfriends and wives are no exception.

Quiet, you might also check out Jungian typology/Myers-Briggs. I've found there are some things to chew on there--especially if you don't have to slag for cash anymore, like the rest of us.

$4mil USD....yegods

I'd have a life. Scratch that, I have one already, just not the one I'd want.

I'd have my son. I would hire every attorney I got my hands on, and file for custody of my little boy. I'd make absolutely certain that he had comfort, security, and joy.

I'd buy a comfortable house. Maybe four or five bedrooms, large yard, basement/studio.

I'd have my truck, hubby would have his Viper.

INVEST LIKE MAD. My son would have college PAID for and ready to go.

I'd be totally debt free. Including the house.

um.. if you live off the interest, inflation will kill you're annual income slowly. sure it'll take a while but why bother when you can invest in virtually any solid area and get returns as well as staying ahead of inflation. If you want an easy-as-piss investment just buy decent property and live off the rent - leaving it in the bank is re-cockulous

I'd be careful. Two or three of them are probably plotting your murder so they can have your content.

All you people that keep saying 4 million would set you up for life like its a complete forturne need to grab a calculator and do some fucking math. Either that or you are 50 years old to start with.

True, if you plan to live in a $100,000 home, drive a $30,000 vehicle, and live on average money for the rest of your life you could be ok. I'm talking to the people that keep saying I'd buy my dream home, a few cars and alot of toys.

I'd like to ask you then how much money would you have to make a year to feel the same wealth you do from 4 million liquid?

This is in no way directed at Quiet or the people that put up a good argument about getting into other ventures that aren't adult. This is to the ones that keep saying they would retire and have a blast for the rest of their life. Quiet is obviously business minded enough to know he wouldn't want to completely retire and live on 4 million forever. Whether it be another business or investments he still wants an income. You silly people that say you would just retire and the money would last you forever seriously need a calculator. Either that or you would be happy with Burger King wages as is.

Perhaps I'd start a business and run it my best, that way I could hopefully get a better return than with other investments and live from a salary plus luxury from the remaining $

"The average lifetime earnings of a male high school graduate is about $1.1 million. Add a bachelor's degree and average lifetime earnings increase to almost $2 million. Add a professional degree and average lifetime earnings shoot up to approximately $4 million." Penn State President Graham Spanier

If you've got $4 million in the bank by age 30 & up and can't live off it for the rest of your life you have some serious problems with managing your money.

Like I said, if you like living on Burger King wages as is. By the way, I'm 23. And there are very very few people that would conserve money like they are forced to do so at a job instead of receiving it in one lump sum.

Take your highest example for instance. 4 million. If I started from high school and made that in my lifetime my expenses would grow with my earnings. Now, give me 4 million at once. If I buy a bigger house that comes with more property taxes, maintenence and so forth 10 or 15 years earlier than the average person with a professional degree that's 10 or 15 extra years of expenses. Same goes for vehicles, vacations, etc. Nothing to do with managing my money wrong. What if I live 5 years longer than the average person and I only budgeted for the normal lifespan? Too many things come into play when you get your money in a lump sum. Thus, so many riches to rags stories that you hear about all the time.

Which brings me back to my question. How much would you have to make a month to feel just as rich as you would on 4 million at once?

what's to agree? if you have millions of dollars after taxes, own several homes, several cars, and have zero debt - the rest is a joke. duh.

Look, anybody with 4 million dollars can retire if they're not extravagant: overindulgent in BIG toys (10 cars, 4 houses etc).

The thing is, if you have 4 million, you're in a position to multiply that money easily. It's easier to get important contacts, easier to get large loans, easier to get partners with money whom you can invest, all of which snowballs into more money for you.

That's if you're interested in making more from your money. Many people want to live comfortably and quietly and with little more than the basic necessities.

You asked if you would retire with 4 million liquid. Not considering anything else I wouldn't do like some people responded and get out of everything for good. Different business maybe. If I had to live on 4 million only for the rest of my life I would actually be taking a step back from what I am used to. I was responding to the people that said they would feel rich forever on 4 million. They don't have several houses, cars, and 0 debt. If I lived 40 to 50 more years with only that amount of money I would have a less than average lifestyle than alot of people where I'm from. And I live in the poor part of the country.

Reminds me of that story by Twain. A guy had a million bucks and wound up getting everything he ever wanted for free. When you have money, people are willing to give you things. What a world.

blah fucking blah. if you have this sort of money, you need to deal with on a full time basis. there is no true retirement. if you'd read the thread, you'd know what i'm speaking of (as you are addressing me, and i've addressed this very issue).

i still find it amusing what people will say

Are you on crack?

4M in wise investment will bring you 5% tax free incomes MINIMUM per year.

Do you really need more than a $200,000 / year? Remember you have no debts.

I would only need 1M in investment to stop working. $50,000 per year is enough for me, and I would re-invest about $15,000 each year and keep $35,000 to travel.

How the hell was I addressing you? I'm speaking of the people that said they would take the 4 million and never do another damn thing. Like you said, fucking impossible. Since it bothers you so much I'll stay the fuck away from your thread though.

Peace

Once again, I was speaking to the people that said they would take the 4 million and run. The ones that want to live forever on it with no other income. Anyway, last post in this thread so enjoy. FLAME AWAY!

What an interesting thread - but almost predictable. A guy who trys to impress people with the E word and now shows us that he is as shallow as an empty beer mug.

How sad that there really are people driven by the need to be important and to be seen with important people.

Personally - I've brushed up against important people in the past when I worked in the law and they never impressed me one bit - in fact the word 'wanker' springs to mind for every one of them.

Give me the common man any day, they are the true elite of this world, the people who get up every morning and get on with their life without making a huge noise about it.

Perhaps that's why one of my favourite pieces of music has always been Aaron Copeland's Fanfare for the Common Man.

Prententious people make me want to puke.
