the solo at 1:25 sounds pretty metal, this is definitely early roots to the genre, could be considered psychedelic too... it's cool to listen to some of this stuff to see the genius of some of these guys creating new sounds as it progressed

I would think maybe something by Black Sabbath. It's probably just a matter of your definition of Metal. The Kinks could not be defined as Metal in any world -- but that's just my opinion.

This might help.

probably Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath.
Helter Skelter is great, but not metal. To me its more like punk.

First Speed metal sound i know of is Goblin's E Suono Rock, 1977.
Goblin soundtracked a ton of horror films including the original Dawn of the Dead, Suspiria and Deep Red.
It's not a speed metal song per se, but they break into it around 2 minutes in-

I always thought that people considered Black Sabbath as the "fathers" of Heavy Metal.

We all know the term came from steppenwolf. So anything before born to be wild is disqualified.

For me it has to be Black Sabbath. The first song off of their first album, released in the Feb 1970: The last minute and a half of the song was just so amazing for it's time....

You can say that all kinds of songs were a pre-curser to metal, but this was the first band that actually WAS metal, IMHO.

(it was also the first band that I saw in concert. I'll never forget it....)

I personally always credited Sabbath's "Symptom of the Universe" as the first real super heavy song.

Too bad the audio sucks here.

True, the Kinks can't be defined as metal. But in 1964 "You Really Got Me" and "All Day and All of the Night" sure must have sounded like the equivalent of metal for the time - especially when compared to the other songs being put out that year. Those two songs pioneered the hard rock era that led to heavy metal.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You_Really_Got_Me

Quote:
"You Really Got Me" was an early hit song built around power chords (perfect 5ths and octaves),[1] and was heavily influential on later rock musicians, particularly in the heavy metal genre. American musicologist Robert Walser wrote that it is, "the track which invented heavy metal"[1] while critic Denise Sullivan of Allmusic writes, "'You Really Got Me' remains a blueprint song in the hard rock and heavy metal arsenal."[2]

this song has the feel of 1970, pure raw drug usage and so deserves major props

the music was certainly ahead of it's time.. the stage props not so much.

Ill go with Summertime Blues as the first metal song

Well, The Who were rocking "Summertime Blues" well before that, but neither band actually wrote the song. Eddie Cochran was genius though and certainly influenced them all as well.

I'm not sure which qualifies more as metal. In A Gadda Da Vida could also be a contender.

Not only is it Metal, you could call it death metal.
Ozzy Osbourne did a cover of it as well.

I would call it ProgRock.

By all that is sacred shred... why has no one even mentioned Deep Purple? They were laying the foundations of metal well before Sabbath, Cream, Blue Cheer, etc.

What are they teaching in schools these days?

Blue Cheer and Deep Purple all put out their debut albums in 1968. Sabbath's first album was 1969. So who really came first? Good question. Blue Cheer formed in 1966 while Deep Purple formed in early 68 or late 67. There are probably a bunch of bands who never got any recognition or even record deals who were doing "metal" before this. Deep Purple's Highway Star is said by some to be the first 'speed metal' song but who knows.

Great idea. Sam has put out a number of great metal documentries in the past few years. Haven't seen any of this series yet but will for sure!

Just to point out that the song Black Sabbath is based on Gustav Holst: The Planets Mars: The Bringer of War. Bill Ward and Gezer Butler have both said that song alone is the heaviest song ever recorder and is where they got the idea to write the music for Black Sabbath. They literally said they wanted to take Gustav Holst music and update it.

Black Sabbath and The Bringer of War are mirrors of eachother just one has lyrics.

On a side note, everything Gustav Holst composed is extremely heavy and was shunned by most people during its time.
