Americans - What full size SUV to buy for 10-15k?

My Jeep threw a rod today and I think its the end of the road for it.

I am in the market for a vehicle and I want to spend around 10-15k on it. So I am looking at full size SUV's in the 2000-2005 year range.

I need a large vehicle for family trips and also because I play in bands and need to haul gear. Winters are pretty hard here and plus I get a little outdoorsy in the summer so a 4 x 4 makes sense.

I am looking at a GMC Yukon in my price range and there also seem to be some Escalades and similar cars available.

I just moved back to the US after 12 plus years abroad so I don't really know what's what here.

I've owned several Chevy Suburbans and loved them. Very dependable, ride great and have tons of room. Gas milage sucks but so what.

My dad has owned 5 or 6 Suburbans over the years. Only thing that had the power to tow his boat. (He has an Avalanche now.) He's also anal about keeping track of his MPG...if I remember correctly, normal driving he got 12-13 MPG, towing the boat he got about 6 MPG. Like you said though, fun ride. I remember taking trips from here in central PA down to the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland (about a 2hr. drive) with the boat when my brother and I were kids. We would fold the middle seat down and have a large area between our far back seat and my parents up front where we could lounge around.

But I don't remember any of his being in the 10-15K price range. Of course, he always custom ordered his to get the largest engine possible, but still. Can you get a Suburban for that price?

Should be able to find a 2003 - 2004 for around $15,000.

Sorry didn't read everything but wouldn't it be cheaper to just fix the SUV you have now and continue to enjoy the vehicle you've grown accustomed to?

But if you don't know what places to go or don't have a connection to a mechanic or something I guess the ripoff pricing isn't worth it..

Anyway, you should be able to pick up a nice V8 Jeep Cherokee for that price range.

The Yukon/Denali, Chevy Tahoe and Escalade should all be similar vehicles. Just depends on what trim package/features you want. They're definitely nice trucks.
