Virus Scanner: AVG or AVAST?

Just curious which one you use... I used McAfee, then switched to Norton... until I heard about a free one called AVG... but some people tell me Avast is better?

The best choice would be sandboxie, so if you did get infected just reset the computer and you're all good. There's really not any kind of better protection.

I don't know about the free version of Avast but I have been using Avast Internet Security and it has been working like a charm.

I'd use as many of the free ones as possible, all at the same time!

OK, so it makes the task bar messy, but better safe than sorry, IMHO...

AVG does the job for me. AdAware protects me from most Trojans.

Virus scanners only slow things down.

A decent firewall and common sense* is all you need.

* : - not running your browser with admin privileges.
- not installing every piece of software you come across.
- not opening every attachment or every email you get.
- ...

I agree. I haven't used a virus scanner on my Windows machine in years. When I did, I was an AVG user.

However, this doesn't apply for everyone. Some people just can't grasp the concept of safe browsing.

While surfing only same web sites does help, such sites can be infested too,for example gfy had trojans a lot of them in ad rotator script. But i was never infested since i using adblock pro and ads not showing to me at all.

I just read this:

Hackers nab norton's source code: http://www.maximumpc.com/article/new...us_source_code .

woops.

To answer the question of the OP, I always go to maximum pc for rankings of newest versions of antivirus.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials ever since I was infected while using Mcaffe.

No issues so far.

Once a week I use spybot.

There's always that rare case when it can still happen and sandboxie can be used for other programs besides a web browser. If you're not sure a program is infected with a virus just run it in a sandbox. Programs can still launch but they can't really infect your system if it's a virus, so just close them or reset the computer if it is a virus.

I've tried using noscript but I found it quite annoying to deal with all the time, most websites use scripts. I've seen a few big sites hacked too, I've even seen a virus warning when searching google images. So in that case noscript wouldn't help you if you allowed google to run scripts.

Meh using linux or BSD would be just as good, probably better but no matter which OS you use your system can still be infected.

Apple suggests Mac users install antivirus software
