An international license is more of a standardized transaltion of your national driver's license.

it's mostly for people who are travelling to a country where they have rarely seen a driver's license from your country or it's in a very different language. An international license then explains how to interpret your original license card, what different fields of your license represents. It might sometimes be required to be able to rent a car at some locations.

I have one that I bring along whenever I go somewhere exotic. Very rarely have to show it, but have been helpful the few times when I got stopped and questioned.
