Some things I learned at Affiliate Summit

As I walk around the show floor at ASW, I've noticed a few things...

Ad networks in the non-adult world tend to be really scammy...they want to charge me 20% to pay my own affiliates, but I can't really have direct contact with my own affiliates. They sometimes determine if a sale is "legit" or not...not by some advanced fraud screen, but they just don't "feel right" about the sale.

Sales reps at ad networks are almost as clueless as the eye candy board whores that used to attend adult tradeshows.

Processor sales reps are completely clueless...they don't know what continuity deals are, but pretend they do...

Non-adult ad networks make serious bank of totally clueless newbies who feel their entire world will collapse without these knights in shining armor saving them from the fiery pits of bankruptcy hell...on both sides of the spectrum: publishers and advertisers.

Overall, with one more day to go, it's been worth the cost and I've made some great connections for business, but have found things are a little different on this side of the internet.

PS would you rather earn 80% of 100 sales a day or 100% on 4 sales a day

I remember going to AdTech a few years back and was quite surprised and how much further adult was in terms of affiliate marketing. I loved that they had girls in booty shorts offering booze, it was like an adult convention. The big thing the programs were pushing was the ability to campaign. At the time I went, adult had campaign tracking years before.

Hey Sykk :D

I am surprised that you "sound" surprised over a lot of that. After so many years doing this, the one thing I learned early, and have always kept a tight grip on is that the business - no matter the industry, is the same. Buyer beware, no matter what is being sold.

It doesn't matter if you are buying a car, a house, a jug of milk, a print ad, a mainstream online ad, an adult online ad etc. There are jackasses willing to scam you at every turn. People will do as much or as little as possible, and will do everything they can to get you to use their product at every turn. Whether or not they do it via good business techniques, or scamming at every turn - its all the same no matter what your product is, or what you want to buy.

Every industry has good people (as proven in 12 years here in adult), and every industry has asshole scumbags that are willing to fuck you over at the first chance.

The best way to deal is to be thorough in your research, make good contacts and gather knowledge and information to make informed decisions. Don't assume that because they aren't "dirty porn people" that they aren't dirty. That just means they aren't porn people :p

/end soapbox LOL

yes, we will gladly take Twitter traffic and any other type of traffic. As long as there is no misrepresentation of the product, I want buyers and don't care how they are delivered

Learning more every day haha.

I do see a means of gaining an edge but have to educate nonadult affiliates that networks aren't all they are cracked up to be.

I'd rather be able to pay my affiliates more for their traffic, but I see where there are advantages to being in some of the networks. They also throw some damn good parties.

I'm balancing between being on a couple networks and the inhouse program to add more reach. It's all part of bring out there. I just feel my ad network affiliates get shortchanged a little bit.

Sorry for not doing multiquotes, I can't do it on my iPhone.

What are these ad networks that you guys are referring to? Places where you can place ads to advertise your mainstream product? And places where you can sell ad space to interested advertisers if you have a mainstrem site? Also, if you have a mainstream product, physical or otherwise, what's stopping you from creating a mainstream affiliate program where you deal directly with your own affiliates?

Sykk,

Not trying to thread hijack..

Are you open to more products not of your own being in your line up?

If so, feel free to fire me an ICQ.. I'm leaving for about 2 hours right now - should be back around 5:30PM CST.

Thanks

they basically act as a middleman between sponsors and affiliates. They have affiliate managers who don't seem to do much.

We do have a standalone program but I want to keep as wide a net reach as I can without having to kill my margins.

I find dealing with them is a lot easier. They are not as hip on things as adult people are business wise. You have to find the right guy in the mainstream company to talk to. The people in the booths might as well be models. I try to preset all my meetings before I go to mainstream shows. I heard there are a lot of adult boys out there this time. Have fun!

Many networks also have their own set of affiliates that like to work with them specifically. They have built a trust with them and trust them to find good "offers" for them.

I think the funniest thing is how the mainstream newbs and not so newbs chase around the so called gurus like shoemoney, sucking his toes to be in his presence. Funny stuff. Witnessed some of that last year at the LeadsCon. LOL.

yeah, that too. It's a matter of figuring which are worth the hassle, the 20% surcharge and the $500-2500 setup fee.
