Who lives on our work, rather than producing anything themselves? Government.

Ray, do you have a better workable solution?

Since man first walked and even in the animal kingdom there are top dogs. Who through their power, by what ever means you determine power, are able to live off the rest of the community. Like a male lion who rules his pride and other than screwing the females does little.

Sometimes the leader is able to give some advice, shepherd his flock to better things and sometimes he just sits there sucking off the host.

Our leaders make sure we don't get invaded by Russia, China or anywhere that has a powerful leader who can shepherd his flock into attacking us. Or are trying to close down other parasites who live off our work. We call them pirates.

I dislike Governments as much as the next man. Just realised no one so far has come up with a workable alternative. I wish they would. Until then, they're all we have to keep the mob from our doors.

Paul.. While I understand your point ( and that scares the shit out of me ) gone are the days of the real leaders of this country. Back when there was a balanced budget and they still defended us from invasion. ( think British rule )

We actually had a Surplus of money at the beginning of the civil war and If I recall correctly it was balanced again and in the Black not long after. Then Government started to grow and the hands started to take more cookies from the jar.

The adult industry as a whole supports a slew of it's own parasite businesses. I'm not in the business of naming them anymore, but I'm sure you can figure out which companies bring nothing to the table in the way of content or traffic, yet somehow end up with content and traffic in the end.

Well, if it wasn't the government that just produced seventeen miles of new freeway that loops around my little hometown, who built it? The unemployed?

?There is nobody in this country who got rich on their own. Nobody. You built a factory out there - good for you. But I want to be clear. You moved your goods to market on roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn't have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory... Now look. You built a factory and it turned into something terrific or a great idea - God bless! Keep a hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.?

If you really believe what you said, I can help you.

If you don't know what the government does for you, open your front door or look out the window.

Hope this helps you.

Nicely poetic, but a lot of fallacies there. Almost all of the services described can be done better and more efficiently by the private sector, and originally were. The ONLY ones which are the true pervue of the government is law enforcement and national defense. Roads, Schools, fire department, etc... can, and has been, done better by private industry, not government.

I am only speaking about the fire dept. Private fire departments have been tried. It didn't work very well because everyone would not pay and all fires were not put out. Can you see the problem?

Good idea, does not work.

99% of all firefighters here are volunteers. Over 75% of their budget comes from voluntary donations.

Interesting point. The days before the US became a massive importer. Because goods from Mexico were cheaper and companies sacked US workers and opened a factory in Mexico. Do you want to go back to the days when a balanced economy was the norm? Look at those days before you choose. I lived through it and we were poor compared with today. The unbalanced economy paid for our lifestyle. Now we repay the debt.

Enron. Union Carbide Corporation. No need to say more. It would take to long to list all the reasons you're wrong. But I will as always.

Who sets out the laws for the private companies to abide by. Who collects, builds and regulates the Roads, Schools, Fire Brigades, Hospital, etc. The private companies or Government?

Because if you lived in an area where it wasn't profitable to have a fire station, you would have to move. If you couldn't afford to move and a fire started in your house, does your neighbors insurance if he has one, cover you or do you perish and the fire brigade only get called out when his fire is well under way. Won't even go the route of wild fires in the forests and wilderness areas. Too easy a target to shoot you down.

There are many things a central governing body has to regulate. Like what is safe to eat and unsafe, speed limits on the private roads, manufacture of the private run roads, upkeep of the private roads. And everything else. You can have a Government that is answerable to the people every 4/5 years. Or a private company who s answerable to share holders. Take your choice.

Sorry, I am referring to 100% privitized, for profit, fire departments. The problem is getting everyone to pay. No pay, no service. That's capitalisum.

You can have a Government that is answerable to the people every 4/5 years. Or a private company who s answerable to share holders. Take your choice.

The free market would control them, and would be MUCH more responsive to people's actual needs than a Federal government that has, for example, created 80,000 new regulations on businesses from non-voter controlled agencies in the last 3 years. Stock holders control companies only to the extent that they want them to make a profit from their investments, (which made the company viable in the first place). If the free market doesn't like their products/services, then they will not do business with them. Government can use force, and does.... often. The US has never had free market capitalism, always crony capitalism. All of the Robber Barons of the 1890s were crony capitalists, propped up by government regulations and land grants that squeezed out their competitors. (Except for JJ Hill, whose railroad actually made a profit all the way up to today)

We are talking from opposite sides of the fence, I guess. This could go on for hours and hours, probably with no real resulting change of position. Have you ever read Frederic Bastiat, or Hayak, or Mises?

If those are too heavy to read, I would suggest John Stossel even.

If you are interested at all.
