how to drink water safely? Are chemicals in plastics makings us fat, giving us cancer, etc?

I was watching the nature of things last night and have suddenly become more aware of the dangers of plastics. Sure the easy solution is to drink tap water, right? Well then you stil have fluoride, antibiotics, and any other medications people have ingested in the water supply. So what does someone do? Even my canned beer is lined with this bpa type plastic. Thats an easy solution, swtich to bottles but as for water, i just don't know. I don't want to have a son with a 'feminized brain' due to myself and my girlfriend always drinking water bottles. Are there any good filters out there that can take the other dangers out of tap water?

Also should stop heating food in plastic tupperware, etc and avoid canned foods..what else?

you should probably suck it up and drink the water from the tap like everyone else does...

we have the cleanest, healthiest water supply and filtration in the world. To question that is fucking ludicrous...

flouride? antibiotics?? you got to be fucking kidding me...

Flouride is in bottled water too so just forget that but you didn't mention what bothered me the most about tap water is traces of anti depressants and all sorts of other medications in drinking water. water treatment systems aren't made to remove this. I also question how great they really clean the water when the sewage backs up into the river and nuclear reactors in deep river (upstream from ottawa) have been found to be leaking since the 60's.

Switching from the small 20 oz bottles of Zephrhills water I've gotten the regular gallon milk jug several times but they have a huge plastic taste in the water that made me sick. Finally I found larger but thicker bottles that didn't have that fucking taste. I emailed them several times but they wouldn't respond. Those gallon containers of water surely are not suitable for drinking.

They changed the chemicals here they put in the water and it gave me horrible heart burn. I don't ever like to drink out of the tap but unfortunately I had to. I like DeerPark myself.

Plastics contain estrogen mimicking compounds. This might be why so many modern men have turned into drama queens. Use glass and stainless steel. Toss out the plastics. If you have to use plastics make sure they are at least BPA free. BPA is also present in high levels in most canned goods and in fast food wrappings/containers. Everytime you consume BPA you are furthering your transformation into an emasculated sissy bitch.

How do you know if a plastic is BPA free? Does the FDA require this labeling? I've never seen such a label, not that I've looked.

I haven't seen larger, gallon sized bottled water in glass containers. I've only seen the smaller 12oz and such.

Even bpa free isn't really ideal. in some cases they are worse than bpa. regardless i agree and there seems to be a number of things in addition to avoid endocrine disruptors, ie eating organic meats and milk. i am more concerned for my kids sake than mine.

Well, having a kid I have to look out for that because kids are so much more at risk from all the garbage in our food/water. Don't buy ANY juice or food in plastic containers because it all has BPA except some baby food products. As far as plastic containers....."BPA FREE" is usually listed on the front of the product packaging.

Just avoid plastic. You can buy milk in the old style glass milk bottles and toss out your tupperwear in favor of glass containers. I buy all my peanut butter, honey, jam, and other items in glass containers and then save them after they are empty to use as food jars around the house.

We do not avoid plastic 100% but I would say we are only exposed to about 20% of what other people are exposed to.

If you do use plastic for water jugs then I think "Tritan" is the best material. It looks just like any other plastic but is supposed to be the safest.

You can now buy some canned foods that are BPA free. Whole Foods has some brands that are BPA free. Avoid all canned veggies/beans/fruit to be safe unless you want your daughter to develop sexually at an early age and want your son to have a small penis, vote for Marxist politicians, join the Occupy protests, and sit around listening to show tunes.

I use to work for a plastics manufacturer making PET bottles for coke, deer park, etc. This was 12 years ago, and I never heard BPA mentioned until a year or so ago. Just taking a glance through my kitchen, I have a plastic toaster, plastic coffee maker, plastic water cooler with plastic 5 gallon jugs, canned food, plastic storage containers, and it goes on...

I think I'll work at replacing the coffee pot and the water cooler first, as they see the most use. Canned food is easily donated away and replaced. Storing food in glass containers is easy enough.

I have work to do, lol.

looking at pitcher filters, they are all made of plastic too. not all plastics are bad but its often not clear which plastics to avoid. a rough guide can be done using the recycle code on the bottom but that doesn't always mean it doesn't contain bpa. i don't think you'd have to worry about the toaster as its just the outside that is plastic, the food doesn't touch it but the other things are basically what i plan to replace too.

I remember reading about the big "plastic bottle" scare. Supposedly all this bad stuff was coming off the bottles and getting in the water. After all, there were laboratory tests proving it.

The only problem was that it was only found in one college student's thesis and it turned out the contamination actually came from dirty test tubes.

Check your ottawa local water board or hydro board or whatever you call it. If it's anything like here, you will find the most recently posted report on your tap water quality online.

Here's one way to get a good bottle: http://water.org/gift/

When you were a kid plastics weren't being used as much as they are today. I'm in my thirties and can say the same for when I was a kid. Everything was glass, metal, or wood, but not much plastic anything.
