A Question about The Thing (2012)

I'm going to watch it with a bunch of friends later today. I was a fan of the Eighties remake by John Carpenter, but I wasn't sure of this one. To those who saw it, is it another retread of the Carpenter movie, or is it something completely new? How's the creature? And do you think I should just skip it and just watch porn?

It's OK to watch if you haven't seen the John Carpenter version, but if you have, you just keep thinking of how much better it was throughout the whole film.

It tries to rip off the flamethrower scene where they are testing blood but it does a very poor job. And the CGI looks stupid compared to the original makeup effects, other than one or two scenes where it looks pretty decent.

The only question I have, and I really hope someone can explain this to me is ---

If the transformation is such a bloody, gooey, disgusting event, how does the clone get clean, perfect clothes? Wouldn't they get ripped to shit and there would just be a blooody, naked person running around trying to fool everyone?

The only thing I can think of is that the Thing knows what it's host knows, so it can go to their locker and get some un-bloody pants and a shirt. Clothes come from something organic, but they don't live and breathe -- so I think replicating the clothes is unlikely.

Concerning the movie, as big fan of the original(who isn't) I thought it wasn't great -- but it was better than I expected.

The original version is from 1951,not so gory, but the suspense is much better. The last one is entertaining at most. But each his own taste.

It doesn't replicate the shape it infests and takes over the original body that's already wearing clothes.

The new one is supposed to be a prequel, showing what happens in the Norwegian camp which is kinda dumb because we know they all die except two and then get shot by the Americans at the start of the next movie :/

Read The Things by Peter Watts if you liked the 80s movie, it's a retelling of the film from the point of view of the creature. Available here

Okay. But it rips through clothes and bleeds like a stuck pig. Why are the clothes clean and in perfect condition?

I'd give it a try and see for myself. Don't think it is better than the original though.

I'm a big fan of the original and I thought the new prequel was OKAY...some of the cgi effects were pretty corny but it's a decent movie to pass time with. Doesn't hold a candle to the original The Thing though.

I loved John Carpenter's version. The suspense was great and the effects were fan-freaking-tastic. The FX even hold up even today.

John Carpenter has 2 other movies you should see : THEY LIVE and PRINCE OF DARKNESS. Both are low budget and non-gory, but they are high on suspense. "RED EYE" is also worth mentioning.

(Stupid trailer but great movie)

(Good trailer but too long and gives away too much. Don't watch it unless you need to)
