Question for health nuts

Today I had bacon and eggs (over easy) for breakfast. I feel as if I have a lot more energy than on a typical day, where I'll have cereal. My cereal is typically Raisin Bran, Cheerios, or Kashi. I noticed the same thing one day last week when I had bacon and eggs for breakfast.

I'm trying to find some science as to why this may be but I can't come up with anything. Is it all in my head?

haha you are just happier - bacon is the best.

meat has protein so i guess it's possible bacon in the morning might give you more energy than cereal.

endorphins? good little blurb about it here...

i think in moderation there is nothing wrong with that breakfast. May have been the body craving protein as well. You normally get enough?

The bacon and eggs have a lot of protein. The cereal is mostly carbs. I prefer to have a solid food breakfast containing both protein and carbs as well as a fruit like a banana or oraange plus some tea to start my day. In general eating just a bunch of carbs for any meal like cereal or a bagel like many people do with no meat (protein), fruit or veggies (vitamins & antioxidents) to balance it is not a great idea.

The bacon and eggs are low-carb so your blood sugar level is remaining stable while you are also getting the protein you need to stay full and energized for the morning. Cereal can be good fiber, but the carbs will give you a sugar spike followed by a low. I love the stuff to death, but can't eat it because it makes me so sleepy and then I just want to eat more.

I go with fried rice lately. Egg and chicken(or fried tofu or ham) in it, with lots of vegetables. Beware though, it's super addictive. Usually when I make rice now, it's to put in the fridge for the next day's breakfast.

Hmm. All of this makes sense.

I don't really eat a lot so keep that in mind for my next question. What should I have for breakfast? Maybe a smaller bowl of cereal and some fruit to balance? I don't see myself eating protein every morning for breakfast.

A tuna sandwich with a pickle on the side is starting to sound like the perfect breakfast!

Start seeing yourself eating some form of protein every morning for breakfast. But not just protein- rather protein & carbs and fruit together in one meal. That will get you energized for the day and avoid a carb crash. You can eat eggs and a piece of toast plus a banana for example. Or bacon (it's kind of fatty & greasy though) plus a bagel and an orange. I often eat a half of a chicken breast, plus half an English muffin and a banana as my breakfast. Or even a can of tuna and a bagel plus an orange. Any combination of protein, carbs & fruit is good.

Yep protein, and you get that rush of feeling good from eating something that taste so Dang GOOD.

It isn't the bacon or eggs that are 100% bad, they have good qualities also. It just happens to be the grease they are fried in, and the fats they contain naturally.

You should try some protein shake or handful of Nuts in the morning. Maybe Peanutbutter toast.

Eat a smaller bowl of cerial and a wholegrain sandwich with a good deal of protein on It(tuna, ham, chicken etc). Eat the fruit as a mid before lunch instead.

Being healthy and being skinny is sort of getting mixed up these days. Eating tiny amounts of food may make you look "ripped" but that doesn't mean it's healthy.

Of course, you have to be honest with yourself, but if you truly don't feel good after eating a very light breakfast, then you probably do require either more protein or more calories. The eggs are fine but I would find a replacement for the bacon.

Also, cereal is not really a good quality food. It can be processed, it contains preservatives, and often it contains grains that are totally unnatural because they have been engineered. Cereal is basically like potato chips or any other snack food but for some reason it's thought of as healthy.

Don't forget that there are also very good alternatives to Eggs and Bacon for protein in your morning meal.

Ham
Low Fat Cottage Cheese
Greek Yogurt
Turkey Bacon
Turkey Sausage
Turkey Chorizo (Get this at Whole Foods, it is amazing for Breakfast Burritos)

Balancing the above with fruits, veggies (Veggies in a scramble are great Asparagus, Zucchini, Spinach work well), and high fiber breads (Sandwich or Bagel Thins or Whole Wheat High Fiber Tortillas) will power your body for most of the day.

i skip breakfast too often, not on purpose just a time thing.. haven't considered the protein energy thing though. I normally have my protein shakes after a morning workout, but those don't seem to be enough for energy. Adding fruit may help..

Here is what it is: Iron and enzymes and what comes from (especially red) meat.

I get the same and dont feel nearly as energized if not getting red meat in the diet. Altho pork is called a white meat it affects you same as beef with more energy.

Just something I noticed too. Plus both are proteins and you should lean on protein no matter what the form.

Meat and veg, meat and veg, meat and veg. I find that is how I feel best but gets a bit boring.

It is a combination of the protein and the endorphins I would guess.

What about oatmeal as a protein source? It has 11 g of protein per serving, that seems pretty solid.

what are you having your cereal with?

I find a cream or half and half will solve the problem, you need the fats to counteract the high carbs of the cereal or else, like some have referred here, you are spiking your blood sugar which leads to the way you are feeling.

Tell ya something else. I have three fried eggs to start almost every day.

I fry one dozen in threes in butter. Then store in threes and nuke later. X-Large are best size eggs. For $1.79 I have breakfast ready for 4 days.

Takes an hour to do as you have to super slow cook covered at super low heat for about 10 mins in a nice lil pan that fits three eggs.

Ya want em a lil runny but they store fine so when you nuke em.. purfect. Store on styrofoam plates with a dish for a cover. No cleanup.

Best thing ever. Nothing hits the spot or is easier to eat. So nice to always have breakfast ready. Sometime I might ad a piece of toast. My cholesterol.. eh could be high.

Dont notice anything. Pork fat is prob worse. Could fry them in oil but real easy to burn and you want no crust. Butter works best so your pan doesn't get a coating of burnt egg after the first three.

It may not be what you added but what you removed. In particular the naturally occurring opiates in milk.

I also have my cheap drink with it: 12 oz Minnesota tap water (good stuff where I am, espec in the winter) with a shot (Tablespoon) of Braggs Apple Cider Vinegar. True. Prob helps cut the cholesterol.

Anyone else do Braggs? Good stuff, the taste gets addicting. Vinegar is super good for you.

Sounds like you are getting a taste of sustained energy from that high protein meal. Nothing at all wrong with eggs and bacon. If you're dieting, you'll want to switch to turkey bacon, but I know you're not in that boat. When you have cereal (and I just assume) it has some kind of sugar, you'll crash after a few hours.

Here is what I have normally.

At 630am I have a Clearvite shake with almond milk before I got to the gym to get the carb load I need at the gym.

At 815am, Right after the gym I have some sort of animal protein and a bowl of raw organic oatmeal with cashew nut butter in at right after that. Sometimes gluten free bread and some cashew butter.

Around 1030am I have some kind of fresh fruit and a handful of almonds for a snack.

At 1200pm I eat greens with either chicken, fish, or beef with some veggies or something else. This gives me sustained energy to about 300pm.

At 3pm I have some kind of snack like apple chips, banana chips (No sugar coated), or cashews.

At 630 I have dinner. Quinoa, or wild rice, or some other low starch filler with chicken, fish, beef or a veggie burger, gluten and dairy free.

At 900pm I have some kind of low fat, low carb snack to close the day.

Throughout the day I have at least 2+ litres of water, and water with every meal.

Honestly, me cutting out sugar from my diet made THE most difference over the last few months. Being gluten and dairy free only makes it all better in my opinion.

Caffeine was the other thing that was just the enemy to my mind and body. Since I've been free of caffeine, I am seriously a different person. So much more relaxed, I don't lose my attention on task at all. It is night and day from when I was consuming caffeine.

I know the exercise 4 times a week is making a ton of difference in my energy levels as well, but the sugar and the caffeine, at least for me personally, were just killers.

Aslo, when I drink alcohol now, I have just hard liquor. No mixers. No beer. Just scotch neat in a glass or wine.

FYI, the diet above comes in around 1800 calories, which is what my trainer has me on doing circuit training and kickboxing.

Live well.

Good interesting stuff. So you have no cheese. Cheese is something I got to give up. I wont eat Sour Cream. Heavon forbid, yet cheese is a higher % saturated fat.

Also you have to give up the sugar agreed. I still buy those lil gummy bears of diff kinds. Corn syrup I realize and bad but you tend to not consume as much if those are the only sweets, altho you can get carried away on them too.

Gummys are better for the teeth as they dont really get in the teeth as bad. To me giving up all sugar/corn syrup is the hardest.

And as I heard Tiny Tim once say, "beer is liquid bread". lol So true.

Anyhow I am always interested what people tend to eat. Noone ever admits they eat junk tho. Everybody (who posts) always eats no sugar. Not saying you do. I believe you. The sugar eaters are the folks who dont post their diets I guess (the majority).

Yah, the hardest thing to avoid is sugar. And the worst for you is HFCS, because it's made from corn. It's 2-3 times more fattening than refined sugar.

Its in EVERYTHING, well most everything that is processed and sweet in any way. It was born as a very cheaply produced sweetener. All the processed food manufacturers fell in love and adopted it.

If you must have sugar, you should go evaporated cane sugar. If you must.

Beer is pretty bad too. Very fattening. Hence the phrase "beer belly", that's exactly where it goes. lol.

I have the luxury of having a dietician for a trainer, so I get facts, no GFY guesses.

The thing that dazzles me the most is how most of us are never really taught how to eat. Society as a whole gets its "health" information largely from television and word of mouth, which is a lot of regurgitated television marketing advice.

We were fed garbage as kids growing up. Lots of East Coast comfort foods that were cheap and easy to prepare for a family of 6. I had to teach myself how to eat all over in the last few years. Most of what you think is good for you is actually terrible for you. Milk being one.

I'm not the guy to try to convince or convert people anymore, but I do encourage people to get their own information from sources that they feel credible and decide on their own. I can only account for how I feel.

It is as simple as going on..

The Don't Buy It Diet

But something overcomes me (us). We rationalize in the store, "we will buy the sugar/corn syrup but make it last, just a lil each day.

Then we have a bad night, half fall asleep (worst thing) and pig out before bed on whatever is available even to the point of sleep walking to get it. Bring it back to the bed. We know what we are doing, half awake, but powerless...

Been there?

Good stuff

Milk you mention. I admit I am a heavy cheese eater. lol Prob about 1 and 1/2 LBs week (24oz) No milk. Or cream. Only cheese. Somehow thinking cheese is better than cream but chease is thicker than cream.

It is a good thing I mostly cook my own meals 100%. Pretty healthy. Except a tad of sugar/ corn syrup. (if I have it I WILL binge on it as I said tho) I DO avoid the HFCS tho for sure, was aware of that. That stuff nausiates me. Beer ("liquid bread" is the perfect definition) 1-2 /day. That aint too bad tho.

Pasta ocassionally but it is so fattening. I have been starving myself last couple days and got my weight back (went shopping yesterday too - good walk) Lost 3Lbs in one day. All pasta weight. Had about 4 oz (dry weight) over 4 days is all. But that is enough

Plus it clogs you up. Of course it is really only white bread which is one of the crap foods.

Ya know the sugar is 100% psych. I have gone without if for about a week 100% and I noticed the belt got a loop tighter in only one week. I was also eating Splenda tho (as a crutch, thinking it was ok) like in sugar free Wurthers. That sugar-free stuff now days is bad for ya tho too. If ya eat too many.. big trouble

I makes ya toot lol like nuts. I gave my friend and his wife one piece each and it affected them LOL

Dates are good sweet substitute with maybe some coconut that isnt full of sugar.

Cali has good jumbo dates that I see here at Xmas.

But yeah, I am a tad over weight, since about age 25 when I discovered and started eating Blue Cheese, seriously. Salad dressings are so fattening. But the real reason is coming up...

I was about 6' 3" and 255 in my Pizza glory years. Not slim but Dominoes and nothing but Diet Coke kept me fat. But tough enough to lug cases of pizzas up four floors of stairs for 10 hours (not all but I kept moving.. )

It is embarrassing but I am around 300 now, tad over, tad under. So yeah time to suck it up and put away the cheese I guess lol. Im a big guy so I can carry 300 half way easily but it is getting to be too much weight now.

I ate all the junk many times over. So I need to start counting cals again and create a deficit.

I was about 190 up until age 25 in 1982...

What happened in 1982? Something called Diet Coke came out. SO much better for you was the hype.

This is true. Seeric, I drank NOTHING BUT Diet Coke (we didnt know any better) every day from 1982 till 2002 (there was not bottled water everywhere like now). Very little water like we drink now days. I even had a 12 pack in the car at all times.

And my weight immediatly took off. I didnt pig out that much. I think it prob f'd my system up.

In 2002 I started to taste formaldehyde inside me. I found out it is a by product of digestion of aspertame. Quit cold turkey never went back.

My weight gain was from years back. Same weight last 10 years since I quit in 2002. I could always carry it. Now tho I got to lose it.

I find when I am posting.. I am not eating.

Time to get serious.

Get out and start walking.

Time to get serious.

Get out and start walking.

Start with just a few things. No need to go all health crazy to diet.

Cut out the sugar. Subsitute Truvia. It tastes great.

Drink lot's of water. Stop drinking sodas.

Eat lots of vegetables with your protein.

Take it easy on the cheese.

Take some medical level probiotics like BIO-K for a month to reset the flora in your digestive system.

Start there.

3-6 months of just those few little mods right there will give you noticeable results.

Walk every day for just a mile or 2. It shouldnt take more than 30 min of your day.

Without that sugar and drinking lots more water your metabolism will reset itself and you will shed poundage just from your body burning what it should be burning.

Thanks. Seriously. I am going to take those tips and run with them.

I have never heard of Truvia.

I do drink water (one good thing ) but yeah need to step it up. I noticed you drink two liters a day.

The need for veg is so true. Ya know what is good cooking is with a wong. (lol Edit: I mean a wok) Espec if ya know some good seasoning mix. Otherwise the only way I know to eat them is with Smart balance on them. Maybe a tad of salt. Bad I know. Am replacing salt with Mrs Dash.

Side note: Butter or Smart Balance? My friend says go Butter. Smart Bal is bad. I say Butter (except on my three fried eggs) is worse and go Smart Bal. I am prob wrong lol I usually am. lol Smart Balance is a mixture of non-hydrogenated oils.

Yeah I got to take it easy on the cheese. It is just so convenient.

When you go and have those health snacks like I seen you do., I go and have a slice of cheese. I need healthy sncks I guess but not wheat. I do always have celery on hand. But yeah.. MORE veg. MORE veg. MORE veg!!!

And less. way less cheese. My brother says get the good stuff like Cracker Barrel or better and then just have a slice occasionally. Make 8 oz go two weeks.

"Eat lots of vegetables with your protein."

Luckily I like most all veg. Salads espec as long as you dont use too much dressing.

"Take some medical level probiotics like BIO-K for a month to reset the flora in your digestive system."

Wow, Ill have to look into that.

And the last one and hardest .. walk. No excuses. I have plenty of places to walk even in the winter.

Cheese and sugar. I knew those were the worst. Ya think all that cheese has me clogged up Can I have one beer/day.

I have a bit of a belly. SURPRISE! My friend says John Wayne (who had a belly) died with like 20 LBs of fecal matter inside him and that is what caused the pot belly! My friend has weird ideas. BUT, I wonder if I need to get on laxatives. lol Maybe I have 10lbs of shit in me.

Anyhow THANKS! I will give that all a shot. At least I KNOW what to do and seriously, I appreciate that.

Ya know how well Robin Quivers did with that whole laxative/enema thing. She sure changed herself altho now she is back to have put some of the weight back on. But she was on all veg and especially her green drinks and my God seriously, she looked like she was in her 30's for a while there.

But then she actually got a bit too drawn. You have to know where to stop (if I ever made it that far ) and she rebounded.

OK hope someone else got something out of this. We all sit at the 'puter all day and getting out and getting that walk is prob the hardest yet most beneficial for you.

Logicly I know it but doing it. Diet is important but if nothing else walking for muscle tone. Ya cant turn into a blob.

The hardest thing is the walk, at least in theory, once you are out there it is fine.. once you are home you are tired which sucks.. hehe but the hardest thing walking is the key. Isnt that how life always goes.

I cant let you go yet... by "you" I mean anyone reading, you can go seeric if you need to. I already took too much of your time you were so gracious to give.

Anyhow, lil story of course.. life goes full circle. When I was pre 30 and used to jog around the campus and down around this lake there was a guy about my size now (actually I am prob even heavier than him) who used to putt around and I mean he was slow and just in misery.

I should have never let myself become that person 25 years later. Altho I need only walk and he was jogging. I would be happy if I could "putt" around as well as him someday.

You can have perfect genes as I do but eventually you have to start working the bod. I always hated exercise pretty much..

From the days of running around the block in elementary or junior high. God I hated that even then. To when I did a little jogging in my college days. I guess it wasnt that bad but I wasnt nuts about it.

Since then I always laughed at those who exercised like my genes will out do your exercising but even *I* am going to have to finally start exercising (a walk ooooh scary lol ) again.

But start slow as you say.

OK class dismissed. Go and sin no more.

I still buy that stuff from him. It rocks. I mix it in my oatmeal.

Last I heard he was pursuing his health business offline. I'm looking forward to it being in Trader Joes and Whole Foods someday.

By the way, not sure who you're referring to, in regards to giving advice, but I'm passing on factual information from a certified trained dietician and personal trainer. One that I've been paying 1200 bucks a month to for some time. Been on the super healthy program for many many years, even while partying. It's probably what saved me from myself for many years. 4 days a week of circuit training and kickboxing.

I'm 155 lbs and 13.5% body fat. In my hay day I was 162 and 9% body fat.

Not that it matters, but I think I'm qualified to share some health tips.

Balancing the above with fruits, veggies (Veggies in a scramble are great Asparagus, Zucchini, Spinach work well), and high fiber breads (Sandwich or Bagel Thins or Whole Wheat High Fiber Tortillas) will power your body for most of the day.

good tips, i am going to try the turkey chorizo for sure

to Sly, i eat a big breakfast every Saturday. We go to a spot that has all local produce.
I always look forward to that meal, although i am sure i eat enough for the whole day in that one sitting..lol

Glad to hear he is doing well.

That is also good to hear you are taking care of yourself. $1300 a month for a trainer? You could just about lease a Ferrari for that lol. Good for you

Fruit is full of sugars so you will get the same high and low. Avoid fruit. Fruit is bad for you

That is such BS. Sugar is bad if it is Refined sugar, natural sugar in fruits is different.

I watched marketplace last friday (Canada, for those who don't know) and they were moaning about a fruit drink with plant sterols, saying you have to drink too much sugar to get the benefit, which is kinda true but they didn't mention the fact that natural fruit sugar is a TON better for you than the shit in coke, pepsi etc.

Also on there, which was true (I done some further research afterwards) Nitrites in Bacon, Ham etc cause Cancer.

So this summer I am going to buying a smoker and doing my own natural homemade bacon

Utterly ridiculous. Fruits have natural sugars and are very healthy for you. If you eat them as part of a meal along with meat and breads or other carbs they will all mix together and digest very well.

your body can not tell the difference between these sugars and it spikes your insulin just the same as refined sugars. All fruit is, is natures candy.
