Right, it's kind of weird, but there is a lot of psychology behind it. They may have mental deficiencies, mainly emotional issues, but they aren't mentally ill. There is a line of progression when it comes to joining a cult... you don't just wake up one day and do it. Something happens in your life and then you slowly transition.

yeah while some people that are attracted are generally kooks, most are (initially) rational, successful, professional types looking for self-improvement or because they have a spiritual bent and are seekers.

usually the kook types are shown the door but the professionals are cultivated and groomed because they have money, organizational abilities and their membership gives validity to the cult.

of course in the end they end up broken financially and mentally.
