Blue Screen, computer will not start up
Last night my laptop took a poop. Got it in September, HP, Windows 7.
I'm on ICQ and suddenly my ICQ sort of freezes, then I get a blue screen with a bunch of text and technical details. The end of the screen does not give me a prompt or specific instructions, aside from "contact your administrator." So I restart the computer (after a hard power down) and I'm given two different options. Repair, or start Windows normally. First I do the repair option. Computer takes a minute to "repair." It then forwards to a blank screen, as if it wants to load something, but nothing happens. I let sit for a few minutes, still nothing. I power down again. Then I start Windows normally. The computer goes to the Windows logo screen, the logo runs through its flashing cycle, but nothing happens. This repeats over and over again. I powered down again. I then try each of the above once again. Still nothing. Any clues what's up? Can I do a system recovery to a prior date somehow?

Like suggested, can you start in safe mode and go back to an earlier date with system restore? The fact that HP is in the equation makes it anyone's guess.

You need to capture 3 squirrels for sacrifice to the Sacred Altar of Gates. Make sure the squirrels are virgins and of noble birth. Once you have the squirrels, place them neatly on a wood cutting board, then tie their tiny little feet to the corners so they are spread out. Try to calm them with soothing words as you do this. No need to make it unpleasant for the squirrels. Then, one by one, chant these words "Oh hear me Gods of MSDOS, lift your curse on my notebook and I offer you the blood of these squirrels as payments for your benevolence" - Then make sure the knife (paring knife if you have one.. best to use something small) in a swift downward motion into the squirrels chest to expose its tiny little beating heart. Remove the heart quickly, raising it above your head and displaying it to the cheering crowd below showing them all that you alone command the heavens to do your bidding as the blood runs down your arms and body. Repeat 2 more times. Dispose of dead squirrels.

Windows is most likely fried it's file system due to one thing or another. Most likely you will not get into safe mode, most likely you will not be able to repair it. Try it, but I am 99% sure it's not going to work.
Slave your drive over to another PC and grab any files off of it if there is anything worth saving and reformat. You have to love MS products. |

I agree with Harmon. I wouldn't mess around with trying to repair anything at this point. Pop the drive in an external and get your files off the drive. Good luck.

I'd say that you reinstall Windows. btw did you use a pirated version of Windows or the genuine one ?
If genuine, then you can call Microsoft and get free support from them. |

What is the error code on the blue screen? It should probably look something like 0x000000xx.

Do yourself a favour and buy one of those external hard drive cases that you can just pop your drive in and connect via USB. So convenient if windows takes a shit and you can't restore it for whatever reason.
Most come with both sata and ide connections in case you are dealing with an old piece of shit system.

Do you have a recovery disk for the laptop? If you didn't make one when you got the laptop, you can try to download one from the manufacturers site.

Mine did something similar. It started rebooting itself, go to the Windows logo screen like it was loading, then to blue screen, then reboot again. It would never stop the cycle unless I turned it off.
Come to find out, the computer was lacking on RAM and I was killing the hard drive by running so much on the computer. What I was told is that if you max out your computer's RAM, it partition's part of the hard drive to try and use it as RAM. I was doing this alot as I was running shit loads of stuff. Completely fried the hard drive and couldn't get anything off of it. Learned the hard way. Now I have 3 computers, a VPS (which I run all my system resource hungry programs on), and online storage through my ISP to make sure I don't lose anything again.

Based on the diagnostic test, hard drive is dead. Looks like I'll be sending it back…
People always ask me why I have three computers. This is why. Bah.

having a mac won't mean that a hard drive can't die. As you will notice by his last post it had nothing to do with a Windows issue, but the hard drive died. ;)

FYI for next time:
Next time pick up your phone and take a picture or two of those "text and technical details". Often they tell a geek exactly what's wrong. Sometimes, you put put the first error message in Google and get useful information.

if the blue screen goes by too quickly, use your phone to record it as a video. Then you can step through it frame by frame to read what it actually says

a freeze then blue-screen could be indicative of a hardware issue - hard drive, ram or controller going out. I think it's possible your hard drive's head couldn't correct an issue and from that improper shutdown there may be a corruption issue somewhere. Where was your laptop? Was it overheating at all? Or has it recently?
Pop the drive out if you can, without voiding the warranty, and make a copy of what's on it somewhere safe. And what Raymor said, you should always jog down the error number and look it up it often times tells you exactly what and where went wrong |
