:mad Fucking boot sector virus!

*sigh*

Turned on the computer this morning to discover that I no longer could get to any of my stuff because this stinkin virus destroyed the bios and whatnot, not sure what the hell it was or I'd share.

Here's the problem: I lost EVERYTHING. All of it. Photoshop, games, CONTENT, EVERYTHING.

Including the email program. Which had my receipts from the purchase of my content. *sigh*

Yes, I know I'm an idiot. I had made a backup disk, but (lo and behold), the disk doesn't work,

Would someone from Fetish Brokers please contact me? I'd like to talk to youabout maybe getting my content back.

that really, really sucks. never had that happen, but i did lose a bunch of shit once due to a misinformed usage of ntfs file encryption. yay education!

and now, for all you kazaa users:

download SwatIt off zdnet. it's a trojan scanner. supposed to work pretty good, and it's free.

Hey don't give up hope. Had something like that once. Though it wasn't from a virus. The master FAT got fucked up and it looked like everything was gone. I bought a hard drive recovery program and though the directories were all fucked up, I was able to recover about 95% of the files ok.

The data is probably still there and there are some programs that can grab it for you.

Thanks Tom. AVG apparently didn't catch this one, and I have no idea what it's called or I'd share with everyone else.

Matter of fact, Norton and McAfee didn't catch it either.

It sucks major ass.

Hope this doesn't happen to anyone else.

Where to get recovery programs, then? Please? Had to reinstall Winblows, tho. Any help would be appreciated.

yeah, you need something like a trojan scanner. also, if you don't do it already, something that i subscribe to like clockwork and does very well. i use a seperate drive for all my important data stuffs. anything i need stays on there, including regular email backups. that way, if the OS dies, i can reinstall without losing anything, and it seems to be pretty well protected that way from viruses. all my OS and program files and such are stored on the main drive. works well for me, and doesn't hose me if the OS goes down. just something to think about for those who don't do this. it's better than a backup in a sense, because it's a snapshot of current. (but still do the backup thing)

KRL, and others:
for those of you running w2k sp1, this version does have a known quirk of fucking up the FAT. had that happen once, thought the drive died, nope, just windows. so make sure you're using pre-sp1 or post-sp1 with w2k.

Just in case you have XP, choose "last known good configuration" when booting.

Otherwise, your disk is still there and the content also. So get a new drive , install it instead of the old one ( leaving the old in the computer ), load your OS, install your programs. Then also connect your old drive on the second ide channel as a master and reboot. Your new drive will boot, and you will see your olkd drive as e or F or whatever letter.

You can than copy from the old drive to the new dribve some or all of your info. Programs tough will not work.

For your email, if OE, copie your wab file, etc... or use Outlook Express Backup to do an exe file and install it on new drive.

Viruses are so shitty that I have a computer just for mail, newsgroups and sharing file systems....

PS: use ghost from now on,....

Chalking this up to "Live and Learn." Thanks for the advice. Now I just need to get my programs again and try to regain some of my content. This sucks ass.

yeah, best of luck to you with your content. i hope you can get it worked out.

unfortunately my best computing lessons have been learned by mishap . although the seperate drive thing was just because i was lazy. i didn't want to have to always move things around when i reinstall 3 times a month.

it has ended up saving me tho, spend the $150 on a bigass drive. my next step is to make a fully raided lan server so i don't have to fuck with backups
