abyss al...training is a must. Also, for new gun owners a good revolver may be the way to go. I like the 5 shot Smith & Wesson .357...but it will kick a bit. I have an H&K that is really sweet. I also have a Walther PPK-S...it is easy to carry, but not the most accurate gun.

I don't own one, but I've shot a daewoo compact 9mm (DP51? not sure) a few times, and was fairly impressed. The smoothest double action on a compact auto I've ever shot, felt fine in my big hands. Big trigger guard for a compact, and the trigger pull was fantastically smooth.

The pistol's owner, who let me shoot it, sang it's praises. I didn't believe him about the doubleaction until I tried it, it was pretty amazing.

I've always intended to get one, but I don't really need any more pistols for now. If I was shopping for a new one, that would be one of the first I looked for.

It handled like a compact, not sure if it's thin enough for OPs desires.

OP, just go to a few gun shops and handle the actual pistols.
