If you have the .COM do you need the .NET?

Hi Folks,
Curious on your thoughts.

If you own the .COM of a domain, do you think you necessarily need or would want the .NET version of the same said domain? How about other extensions as well?

If you owned both, .COM and .NET, would you keep the .NET just to prevent someone else from taking it, or just drop it?

Max it depends on your own goals. For most projects we gather up several TLDs, in other cases we register every TLD available to better control and protect the brand. If .COM is king, .NET is certainly his queen.

Thanks, I dont know about ALL extensions, but some of the more common/popular I think tend to agree.

My .ME sites are currently just for fun and relatively recent, no major traffic of any sort as we haven't really developed them into anything yet. This one I really just liked the name with the extension, it was my preferred ext specifically for it.

Thanks for the input. One on of our bigger mainstream sites we have the .NET going to a separate set of forums for the main site. It made sense at the time, but have been wondering whether it would make more or less sense to have structure it more like MAINSITE.com/Forum and opposed to MAINSITE.NET

for a blog or something, I'd just get the .com. If it's a big project, I get .com .net .org at minimum.

I was asking since I'm building a site with a .ME extension......and made the mistake of watermarking pictures and videos like this: MyDomain.Me..............instead of www.MyDomain.Me ......the latest gets me way more type in traffic.....

People are not picturing .ME as they do with .COM.......

Thanks, that's pretty much my view as well. Have been having convos with partners and trying to explain this to them. All of the bigger development pursuits I tend to think that at least these 3 extensions should be secured. Oh, and maybe the .xxx to

That's interesting to note. I had not really thought about it too deeply from the marketing angle as of yet. I think I would tend to prefer marketing without the www. as well.

Not really, but if your .com generates search traffic then the .net etc are worth the cash / traffic they will generate. If its a nothing domain than no.

Go with the www. if your are watermarking promo pictures or videos on YouTube or other places.....people will not type in MyDomain.Me, since they do not picture the watermark as a URL like they would do with .Com

Cheers

It's safe to assume that includes .xxx, right?

Depends on how valuable the name and its branding is to you.

Are you going to spend the money to trademark the name. USPTO, EU Community and Madrid Protocol filing fees can approach $2,000+ ...

If you trademark you can now use immediate URS resolution for Domain Name Trademark Rights Protection.
However, as a "poor man's remedy" name registration in the "important" TLDs limits "cybersquatting" of a valued name

e.g.; get the .com, .net and .org of the valued name as a good start.
