Bullied gay student who fired stun gun is expelled

http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/20...-expelled?lite

Quote:

A gay student who said he fired a stun gun in the air at school when bullies threatened him has been expelled, according to the school district.

...

Young, 17, said bullies hounded him daily. The harassment escalated on April 16, when a group surrounded him at school and threatened to beat him up, according to the Indianapolis Star.

...

"My point was not to hurt anybody ? the purpose was to back them off. I didn?t know what else to do," he told msnbc's NewsNation on Monday.

...

?While the district does not condone bullying, it also does not allow weapons to be brought on our school campuses for any reason. Students who violate this rule will be held accountable,?

...

Principal Larry Yarrell earlier said the school had tried to look into the bullying reports, but Young was not always able to identify all of those who had harassed him.

...

?Dynasty, like many other lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender young people, was pushed out of school by an administration that failed to keep him safe and by school discipline policies that remove students instead of resolve the problem,?
Classic.

Well he did break the rule... but all the bullies should be expelled too!

Then when they try to bully him in the real world since they are all home from expulsion, he can pull out his stun gun or knife or whatever and teach them a lesson then.

I did not read the story, but I hope the assholes that bullied him have been excluded as well.

However, if you bring a weapon into a school you should be expelled.

It's high school, you knuckle up and learn what you are made of.

You either get a win or a loss, but you get respect, SELF respect and worst case scenario you get suspended for a few days and watch Hogan's Heroes reruns.

I don't understand anyone bringing weapons to school. Like you said, knuckle up and see how it turns out. Learning how to deal with shit like that is just as important as learning any subject at school.

how do you 'knuckle up' when its a group against one? these kids are killing themselves so 'knuckling up' isn't going to work for them.

Is this the first high school fight that involved a group against one?

I remember watching many when I was in high school.

Funny how no one cares that the story only gives his account and no other side to it.

There is no excuse for bringing a weapon to school no matter what.

Of course not but it shouldn't be tolerated under the guise that it helps kids learn how to deal with real life situations. Kids shouldn't be afraid to go to school. They are supposed to be there to learn, not participate in some kind of mad max scenario. I was in a few of those situations myself in school and can't say I learned anything from it other than a crushed pop can on the ground can cut someone pretty deep.

When I was in 7th grade, a friend of mine and I would get bullied, I had no choice but to fight back, my friend on the other hand had a quicker response to ending the bullying. One day, we were surrounded by about 5 much larger 8th graders, as they closed in, my friend grabbed his sharp pencil and stuck it deep in one of their throats. That as they say, ended that. We were never bothered again.

I to this day do not know what ever became of him. My guess, he's in jail somewhere.

Amazingly, he just got suspended as they couldn't very well call a pencil a weapon and ban them.

“While the district does not condone bullying, it also does not allow weapons to be brought on our school campuses for any reason. Students who violate this rule will be held accountable,”

The school doesn't condone bullying, but they also don't make rules against it, or expell students who break the rule.

It's easy to have zero tolerance about a thing you can say "thats a ......", but when it takes judgement? Nope.

I wasn't bullied much in high school. In fact, I stood up for those who were bullied a few times and it earned me a lot of respect.

If you know me, you know I am very much anti-bullying. Especially now in a world where 1-88 kids are on the autism spectrum and are prime targets for ignorant bullys.

Holy shit, I'm agreeing with Jimmy3way.

I'm sorry, but bullying is a fact of life. Everyone goes through it. When you get older and join the work force it's called harassment.

when was the last time someone at a workplace stole their shoes, spit in their face, beat them black and blue or have 5 kids kick the shit out of them while laying on the ground? cops would be involved but somehow when this happens at a school its treated differently, why?

Because teachers would have to JUDGE what is bullying, and they're afraid to do that. They'll get sued. They're already busy firing people and piling more students into sub par classrooms these days. A gun you can say "thats a gun" and expell someone. A bully? Whole different set of skills need to come into play to call someone a bully. Like an eye witness with guts.

Bullying in my time in high school was somewhat bearable, as soon as you stepped out of school it was over. And in 1986 if you got in a small fight in an American school, you did not get into crazy trouble as long as no one got hurt seriously.

Today, bullying not only takes place in school but the bullies can now continue to bully their victim after school with the countless social media we have. Furthermore, most school are doing jack shit to stop this bullying phenomena which seems to get worst and worst. And it seems that bullies are becoming nastier and nastier. On top of that, if you get bullied and strike back, chances are you will be the one in trouble. Heck if you slap some asshole, you get sued for all you got. I think the problem is that today's society has been so pussyfied and is so politically correct that bullies almost have free reins.

There is a difference between two kids going at it over something stupid where they push each other around on the playgroud or dump food into each others laps and a group of thugs with knives or in a group who gang up on a single kid and beat the shit out of them repeatedly. Anyone who says to man up and take out one of them is retarded. How the fuck are these kids going to fight back if there are a group of them holding them down or whatever? Are you telling me that you got fucking super powers that allows you to magically pull will power out of your asshole and take them down?

Use your fucking brain for once in your life. This kid was wrong to bring a gun to school obviously but then again it was wrong for the school to allow him to be bullied. Our society is fucked up and want to overlook everything because we don't want to ruffle feathers or just because its easier to push shit under the rug.

Many of these pieces of shits that get by with bullying grow up to be 10x worse because they got by with it and those who were bullied go psycho when older or kill themselves because again it was allowed.

"Young says he's been bullied for a while at the school. He says he's been called gay slurs and has been the target of thrown bottles and rocks. The bullying has gotten so bad, Young says he considered killing himself.

Young's mother, Chelisa Grimes, told the station that she armed her son with a stun gun after complaining to school administrators several times about the bullying.

"I would never apologize for defending my child when the school wouldn't. My child has the right to go to school and feel safe," Grimes told the station."

He [Principal Larry Yarrell ] said they had interviewed staff and students, and he had also recommended that Young “tone down” his accessories.

Good for him. What has he possibly learned:

1) Bureaucracy sucks

2) There is a price for being true to yourself

3) Goto the court of public opinion to right a wrong

Does this make it right? And no, I'm sorry... everyone does NOT have to go through it.

That's why schools everywhere have started anti-bullying campaigns that are taken seriously, not just posters on walls.

We now live in a world where 1-88 kids are on the autism spectrum. 1-54 are boys. That is an overwhelming figure. These kids are much more likely to be bullied than others. So it's no longer a "man up" world since these kids simply do not possess the tools to defend themselves like you or I were able to when we were in primary school.

Not to mention, the number of times I've read about kids as young as 12 who have committed suicide because they can't see any way out of being bullied.

Get some facts: http://thebullyproject.com/
Bullying is a massive problem.

I can't fault him for doing what he had to but at the same time he still has to pay the price for his actions. Those bullying him should also be expelled as well

Kids aren't the same these days. In the last 15 months, 7 teens in my city have been killed by other teens and young adults. They no longer use fists, it's straight to knives and guns.

how are kids supposed to learn when they are living in fear every day? you clearly have never experienced it. the idea that you just 'knuckle up' one time and suddenly its over and people respect is a joke or something that might happened in the 1970's but now now.

Harassment in the work place is a daily. I've had watches and CD players stolen from me at work (shows you how old I am).

I'm not saying it's okay for five kids to beat the crap out of another kid. Clearly at that point, it's not bullying and it's not a problem for the school to handle - it's a legal matter.

There's a huge difference between bullying and assault. Bullying is more of threat by intimidation - "give me your lunch money or I will kick your ass" - and while I'm not saying that's acceptable, I'm saying the way we handle it is overblown.

I guess there are many degrees of bullying. I've seen what you describe as well as what I described and that was back in the late 80's earl 90's. i can only imagine what its like now. here in ottawa there have been several students who killed themselves just last year because of bullying.

Of course I never experienced it, when I graduated from middle school to high school the older kids picked on all of us to see who was the weakest. A fat lip and some bruised fists and they knew it wasn't me and moved on.

If there were no pussies, there'd be no bullies.

i have a cool story about bullying...it's long and im sure i will ramble a bit.
it involves my buddies 13 year old son. who is this september going into grade 9.
A couple of his friends are already in grade 9 so they are on their own in high school.
Well the one kid is getting picked on pretty bad as he is a small guy, and an easy target. What the main guy who was picking on him didn't know is that his best friend who is still in grade 8 is 6 foot 2, and about 180 lbs solid muscle. the kid is a beast and he is 13. So the very next day my friends son goes into the high school...keep in mind he is in grade 8, all the other grade 8's are scared shitless of high schoolers, so this 13 year old kid walks into the high school by himself to find the bully. He finds him and confronts him at his locker in front of his friends. He never threw a punch but he slammed him off the locker a bunch of times and told him to leave his friend alone. The guy said sorry and please leave me alone..lol

Roughly two weeks go by and the bully spots his main target again outside and off school property at a basketball pickup game. The bully starts to beat up the smaller kid again, as he doesnt know my friends son is there, just around the corner. Well my buddies son finds out and he chases the older kid down, pins him on the ground again without having to punch the crap out of him. He pins him and says every single time you do it, im going to be there, and next time im just going to punch the shit out of you.

Anyway, that bully is now part of their group. He hangs out with them.
Next year this kid is walking into a high school that already thinks he is not to be fucked with, in a good way.

Bullies are probably getting bullied at home.

that might work with some, with others they'd just come back with 5 of their buddies to lay the beat down.

I've already told my son 'if someone hits you you punch them back'. We'll take the expulsion.

The only way to deal with bullies is to take them out.
