Is it a waste today to hold domains???

It seems to me like the organic craze is over and the most successful people are the ones that have solid products which are brandable with brandable domains. That being said, is it a waste of our money to be holding so many domains and undeveloped? When I got into this game I thought to myself...wow a paysite owner will surely want this domain and I can sell this for a profit. Guess where that got me...a big old goose egg. Actually, redzone goose egg. Anyway, is that domain game over you think?

I like to put a quick static page up on mine, I did that with one I picked up last month and it's already brought in $100 of sales, it gets 250 uniques per day from Google. Most aren't as good as that, but it's nice when it happens

That does sound awfully nice! And really, $100 is a big win for me. I don't do even close to $100 a day like most ppl here. I would be happy to make that on a static page.

If you do that with the right domains, it's worth it, it will make the domains worthwhile. You never know which ones you'll get lucky with, but I'm sure you will. I only bother with .com .net and .org myself

Domains for some odd reason is one area where people let their imaginations run wild with optimism on how much they are going to make for that 3 word .info. It baffles me. The thing is, anyone that's actually any good at marketing or searching/choosing domains can come up with something thats as good as better.

The shorties and categories.com are gone of course, that's a different ballgame.

most adult domains from few years ago, are now with a SEDO page...

it really makes no sense.. they probably do a few cents per month, when they could sell the domain or just build a site on it..

the future will see domain names meaning less and less, if you aren't making bank with a domain now, might as well let it expire or get what you can for it if it is a really good one

soon 99% of the surfers on the internet won't even look at domain name, they will tap on their laptop screen or phones to go to sites, the domain of those sites could be asdfdasjfalj23.org for all they care, and wouldn't even see as it will be in the background

I am letting many domains expire because selling them isn't worth the time and hassle either

It depends on the domain. Does it hold any type of value such as:

Does it get natural traffic?
Any type of PR?
Short? Brandable?
Top Extension .com?
Is there a ton of searches for it?
Do you plan on doing anything with it? Develop? Any parked money?

If the answer is no to at least 3 of these I would dump it.

I think domain names are past their peak of importance... and I say this owning a ton of them. It's all about the brand.

I know a few people that point their domains at Dating Factory and are making bank. Of course I'm taking lots and lots of domains...

I completely agree with this. The number of people actually typing domain names into a browser or actually reading search results is dwindling.
