incoming Apple fanboys... I use an iTouch for music and what not, Android for phone. I have never had an iPhone, but I assume it's just like my iTouch with phone capability. If it is? The fluidity of everything running off of the iTouch is amazing. I just use my phone for texting and making calls... a few apps like radar, bar code scanner, ebay, stumbleupon (for when I'm taking a shit) and shit - seems to work just fine...

I guess it depends on your budget or if you are looking for status symbol.

What can you do with one that you can't do with the other? Except watch flash files on iphone without plug ins (which are easy enough to get). Probably you should be concerned with your connection and your carrier and take what he has to offer (4G over 3G, not getting capped on bandwidth just because you decided to buy a smart phone now instead of earlier, etc.)

My practical guide:

iPhone good - interface is often smoother. Apple tends to lead with the nicest screens before other vendors have comparable ones. Battery life is better than most. If you can live within their "ecosphere" you will have a good time. After jailbreak, the built in unix subsystem is actually pretty usable. iOS upgrades work on all devices until they're considered out-of-service.

iPhone bad - If you can't live within their ecosphere, you end up fighting with Apple to jailbreak your phone, install software through 3rd party sources. Simple things like themes. Also, bluetooth is neutered to a small subset off what Bluetooth can do, you can't even send a photo. Browser can't download files, nor can a file upload dialog access your photos or other documents. App development is primarily in Objective C, which is for practical purposes only used by Apple.

Android good - General principle of things being possible instead of not. Bluetooth can do just about anything including mice and keyboards, I recently got a bluetooth OBD2 dongle to interface with my car. Flash support is pretty good, most Cam sites work with it respectably well. Depending on phone vendor, root access is often a no-brainer. Multiple web browsers are available, including firefox, handy for me. Multiple vendors means greater choice and competition. Multiple sizes also available.

Android bad - Seems to take more horsepower to deliver the smoothness of the Apple interface. Device vendors control a lot of things about the OS and can remove or artificially limit functionality, as well as abandon the device for newer OS releases (Devices are still shipping with Android 2.2, which was released in May 2010 and replaced in December 2010), which created the need for 3rd party OS like Cyanogenmod (which I run my my devices).

Personally, I have an iphone 4 and an android tablet, although I have decided my next phone with be android based.

The iphone was a game changer, not necessarily at launch but once they enabled Apps, or after jailbreaking and installing 3rd party apps. The smartphones of the time were PalmOS, WinCE, and Blackberry. Android had a lot of catching up to do but in my opinion is a well matched competitor now.

To add one thing to what uniquemkt said, a lower end Android is a lot less painful to replace when you drop it in water or whatever. Capabilities are similar. My wife stopped buying Apple after a couple of them broke from falls or whatever and now uses a $120 Android with unlimited everything from Boost for $45 / month.

For me, control and standards is the big thing. It's MY phone. If I want to hook it to my network, use it for VPN, etc. that's MY business. I don't need Apple telling me what I can and can't do, especially telling me I HAVE to use itunes, which I hate.

My kid has an Iphone and everyone else has Andriods. Everyone loves their phones. However, it seems like every time I turn around I'm having problems with the Iphone. The final straw was two weeks ago when the screen cracked. Of all the phones I've ever had, I never had one break until the Iphone. It cost me more to replace it than it did to buy it in the first place. Now we have a $50 "otter shell" phone case for it, which totally defeats the purpose of the iPhone - Instead of having something sleek and sexy, we have a bulky ugly phone.

I dont have opinion about user side since i never bought any of 3 most popular smartphones, but i am interested to hear opinions from developer side.Seems in my case it would have only sense to develop apps for iphone/ipad since they are only one who allow my country plus their market is biggest.

I've had iPhone 3 and am now using a HTC Desire HD. I will never go back to iPhone.

While my HTC phone requires more frequent reboots to not become slow, it's much MUCH better in terms of basically every single aspect. It even works as a regular phone, something the old iPhone wasn't very good at.. dunno if they fixed that in the 4th edition though *shrug*

My gf has an iPhone 4 though, she loves it.

Had an Iphone 3g and now a 4, but I kind of want to replace it with the Samsung Note... Only caveat now is the amount of people with iMessage that I text internationally. These guys aren't going to install Whatsapp just to talk to me

ANDROID SAMSUNG is way superior than shitty iphone.

80% of android apps are free.

80% of shitty apple apps are paid. Apple only think about doing money, nothing else.

I got an iPhone originally because it had more apps and was better supported, now it seems the opposite is true, more apps and support for Android devices as their market share has grown larger.

I love my samsung galaxy, but I keep using the iPhone as I have a feeling the email etc will be more secure on the Apple device. Long story short, I'm left with two phones and neither one is a very good phone (for talking) at that

Android because I can make whatever apps I want and give them to friends and family or just let people download them (porn and all).

Iphone because it works.

Wife had an Iphone 3GS and I have a new Ipod Touch and new Ipad (for dev reasons).

I'm honestly not impressed with IOS 5 at all.

I am borrowing a Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket from a friend and put ICS Android 4.0.3 on it and am pretty impressed.

So much so that we ordered an HTC One X for my wife yesterday. I'll be getting the Samsung Galaxy S3 when it comes out for myself as well.

Even the Iphone 4S looks pretty dated compared to the newer android devices...

One gripe I had was that push email was slow with the built in android mail client. After playing around with it for a bit, I just replaced the mail app with K9 Mail and now push is even faster than my old Blackberry Torch.

Pretty impressed... also the new Snapdragon S4, Tegra 3 and upcoming quad core Samsung chips just leave the Iphone 4S behind... but get used to a big phone, the androids are much bigger than an Iphone but lighter and slimmer... the huge HD 4.x' screens take up some space though.

I won't be giving up my Samsung Galaxy S2 any time soon...

Don't get me wrong, Apple makes great products... but their business model is apparently based around hand holding and spoon feeding. It's becoming increasingly difficult to jailbreak Apple devices, and considering I'm the kind of person who wants my money's worth, I will not be forking over any money on a device that I don't have complete control over.

That is where Android devices shine. Rooting your phone is a cinch, and once rooted, you can do whatever the hell you want with it. And that is precisely why I spent the money on my Samsung Galaxy S2 and not an iphone. Precisely why I'll be forking over the cash for an Asus EEE T300 (or probably the TF201 since there don't seem to be many huge differences between the 2) tablet and not an ipad.

Now, if Apple were ever to take a step back and realize that people who buy their products should be able to do whatever they want with them, then perhaps I'd fork over the cash for one of their products. But until then, fuck em.

Those who spend money... buy an Apple.

Those of us who make money - Andriod.

I know more people who make $$$ that have an iPhone.

Seems all the havenots have Androids. They talk about how great the phone is
and people who have a iPhone just use the thing.

iPhone 4s is what I use, and if the 5 has a larger screen or 4g on Verizon I will upgrade to it.
