1200$ = 7000 HRK which is almost half of salary of parliament member here,so you could live pretty good with that here in Croatia. And when it comes to retirement part, yes that is a bit tricky if you want stable climate(entire europe have too hot summers and too cold winters)but still l would go to one of Croatian Islands for retirement, maybe even buy one once that will be available since climate it's maybe not best but nature beauty is among top 10 in world.

$600 spread out across four weeks even in Cambodia isn't much. That's only $21 per day. You still have to eat, so assuming you eat three meals a day, unless you are fishing out of the river and cooking it yourself, or eating at the cheapest locals street stalls on the side of the road, you'll blow through that $21 in food alone, and probably then some. This does not even take into consideration any transportation getting around the city, any entertainment, any beverages, or in the case of Cambodia, women and/or weed. Oh, and that doesn't account for however much you'll have to spend for visa costs to remain in the country long term, and heaven help you if you get sick and need medical attention.

So what can you really do on $21 a day besides simply stay alive and keep a roof over your head? Not much.

When I think of retirement? I think living well, doing what I want when I want to. Not sitting around doing nothing and eating shit food because I only have $20 a day.

You are retired. You have no job. Probably no school. You have an endless amount of time on your hands to fill with no money to do the things you have always dreamed of doing. Sounds boring as hell.

Own a nice but modest house. Own your vehicles. Own nothing you are paying monthly payments for and retirement is very affordable. I would think this holds true everywhere.

The last thing you want to do is be poor in a foreign country, on a permanent basis.. Listen to the expat advice in this thread versus silly articles about living the high life for cheap.

The feds decesion to supply banks with almost free money has devistated anyone that saved cash for retirement. Banks pay almost nothing now to depositers. It's sad the amount of retirees that are rapidly going thru savings because their money no longer makes money.

The more I read, the more staying in Texas sounds like a good idea. I bought a three bedroom house in a perfectly okay part of town for under $100k.

OK, so say you find a place for $300 a day, which you COULD find with no problem. Now you have $32 per day.

Still not much.

You can do it, but you'd really have to watch every penny. But that still doesn't account for visa fees or God forbid any medical treatment you may need. That also doesn't account for any travel outside of the place you're living.

$1200 USD per month is 7560RMB per month. You can live a very comfortable lifestyle here on that. I live here, married here, have a bricks and mortar business here as well as online.
Where in China is this? I don't think I could live without a fast internet connection though It's essential for our job!

I think retiring comfortably on an income of $1200 a month in many countries is doable IF

1) You own your own property
2) You have quality medical care/insurance

That's just common sense though considering these are two of the biggest expenses!

A lot of Asian countries look interesting to visit but retiring to one, hmmm. I don't like the concept of not being able to own land, defeats the purpose of buying.

$1200 USD per month is 7560RMB per month. You can live a very comfortable lifestyle here on that. I live here, married here, have a bricks and mortar business here as well as online.

The average monthly income, with two income earners is around 3000-4000 pm. They also have kids and other shit to deal with, extra expenses related to that, plus rent. So if you're single on $1200usd pm you're laughing. The more you make the better life style you enjoy of course applies.

Apartment rental:

2 bedroom, 1 tv room, 1 dining room, 1 kitchen, 1 bathroom/toilet, 1 balcony, gated community, ocean water front views, 2500RMB per month. Utilities (gas/water/power + parking fee) additional 300RMB pm. Total: 2800RMB pm.

Getting around:

Taxi: Flag fair 8RMB, 20mins drive around: 20-25RMB.
Bus: 1RMB. Sit on that fucker all day like a hobo, still only 1RMB.
Motorbike taxi: 6RMB.

Do what I did, buy an electric power bike/scooter thingo. Buy second hand, one time price, 2000RMB or less. Full battery recharge 1RMB. Takes 3 days to use up all the juice, re-charge and drive around like a boss again. Top speed 45 km/ph. Hard to do that in heavy traffic, so just use the footpaths like the locals do, fuck the police!

Food:

You can eat the most delicious, freshest food daily, cooked by mom/dad small shop front operations for cheap. 2 people can walk away bloated like a fat kid at MC Donalds for 30RMB. Or you got to a local fresh produce market and buy the same thing, but cook it yourself at home for 10-15RMb, so half price.

Pro tip: Get a wife, give her money, she will go out and do this for you. She also comes in handy with visas, see the next section.

You can also eat out at fancy ass western restaurants, top Chinese fine dinning, silver service and the price range is not much higher. Per person, 50-100RMB.

Visas:

Arrive on an L tourist visa. Get it extended max two more months. During that time get married (most simple as fuck, non effort process I've ever done in my life. Thailand for example is a cunt when dealing with visas), get a 1-2yr marriage visa, pay 800RMB per year/2. Sorted, easy as fuck. Carry on with your life.

Medical/Hospital:

No medicare, no safety net. User pays system. Private hospitals are shit, avoid like a 20RMB whore.

Stick to the government hospitals. If you are white, you are elevated to god tier. You will pay for it, but you will get all the western trained doctors, and not some janitor that is wearing a white lab coat. (Think I'm joking, I've seen it myself).

I got a nasty ass, puss infected, white goop dripping, throat infection. Went to public hospital, got diagnosed within 20mins, 5mins to pay for meds, all done under 30mins. It took me longer to park the bike, chain it up so some fuck don't knock it off and pay the parking management auntie 1RMB.

Internet: Slow compared to most first world countries, but I get 4mbps down and fuck all up, but it's good enough for me. Bring a VPN you will need one if you want to do facebook, youtube, white people things, oh and work on your adult shit.

For the people here that just do mainstream shit, (like me these days), you hardly need a vpn at all.)

Other great things about the place. 8 million locals, 300 expats, a non existent police system (you see them but they do fuck all) no road rules, no breath testing (if you drink and drive you are a fucking cunt though, think of others and their families before you get behind the wheel), no in your bedroom/life gov policies, no tax on world wide internet income (at this point in time), they love Australians, English & Americans are ok. If you are Russian, you are below a black person and they dislike those and if you are Japanese, you will be lynched in the streets.

600ml beers are 4RMB each, bbq mystery meat on most street corners after 10.30pm at night and the weather is tropical warm 11months of the year. No pollution/smog in the air and all round great living conditions. You can fuck whores till your dick falls off for 200RMB a pop or get wanked off during a relaxing massage for 100RMB. Or you can get married and fuck for free, but end up spending all your money on Taobao (Chinese Ebay) lolol.
hey man..im loving china more these days...we do some mainstream stuff there.
china is awesome

Another thing these stupid articles never mention is how much you may pay for a Visa, real medical costs, the cost of paying double in some places because you're foreign, and so on. It's ALWAYS much more expensive than any of these articles ever lead on. Makes me wonder if the idiots who write them actually live abroad or not, or are they just some dirty back packer living in a hostel making extra money writing this crap.

But if you want to live like a local, yes, you can get by on whatever dreams they are selling in those stories.
This is so true. A BMW, Rolex and 48 inch plasma are cheaper in the US then almost anywhere in the world so if you want those types of things in your day to day then expect to pay for them.

The big difference is how much a maid is. Can you get your house clean, food cooked etc for a few dollars a day then it can add to your life style.

$1200 can be done in some places.. but if you want to retire, you should enjoy your life... that means you need drink money, restaurant money, drug money and of course hooker money etc...

Upgrade your goal you $3000 a month,(not very unrealistic IMO) and your options will be a lot better ;-)

do you mean hainan? if so ive been to haikou and sanya there. It was ok but i wouldn't wanna live there. Haikou has a nice vibe but the beaches were all under construction (about a year ago). Sanya has nice beaches but the city is very small. After being in sanya for a week or so it started to feel a bit claustrophobic.

Play your cards right and one can retire in the U.S. on $1200 per month. I can do it but I normally spend an average of around $1500-$2000 per month. I own everything I have outright and have zero debt.

Who in their right mind would consider retiring if you are only making $1200 USD a month? Get off your ass and make sure you are consistently making AT LEAST $10,000 a month before retiring.

Just my 2¢ worth.

Yup. Haikou is shit though. If the international airport and bullet train didn't go there, I'd never have to pass through. Fuck I hate that city. And yeah, if you don't like living amongst 8 million people in Sanya, then it's definitely not for you lollol.

One other thing I forgot to mention with rentals here, they come fully equipped. TV(cctv & cable), Kitchen, Bedroom, pots/pans/kitchen sink, Internet, phone and so on. All included in the rental price, our apt, pics as follows is 76sqm.

Lounge/dining room & number 2 bedroom with sliding door.

Kitchen, door into bathroom/toilet & door into main bedroom

Main bedroom. Behind yellow blink is balcony with water front views.
All bedrooms have air con and internet/phone/power points.

Plenty of shelving in main bedroom.

Bathroom wash hands room. To the left is western toilet and shower behind sliding glass door.

This property was 2500RMB or $395USD per month. My wife tells me today we could of got it even cheaper for around 2000RMB pm, if we had signed the rental contract in the off-peak tourist season. Live and learn.

8 million in sanya? Didnt look that way at all judging by the kinda small city center. But maybe 8 mill in the whole area i guess, but even that i find hard to believe. Doesnt matter though, as long as you enjoy living there

The idea of retiring somewhere on X,XXX / Mo has always been a flawed idea as it assumes that nothing will change economically in the area over a long period of time (i.e. rent goes up dramatically, food costs go up dramatically, medicine goes up etc)... and if you're in a position where you've retired with nothing but 1,200.00 a month and ANTYHING changes that's not to your benefit (exchange rates or prices or bank with your money going tits up etc), then you're totally fucked.

Sanya city central has a lot less I agree with you. But then there is the outer suburbs which also belong to Sanya, that bumps up the numbers. Dadonghai, Lanhai, Yalong Wan, the ethnic minority areas and so on.

Well, to illustrate,

I'm pretty sure the costs of living here in Czech Republic (energies, rent, basic utilities, gas, grocery bill) nearly doubled as compared to 2001 or so.

There are several causes -

- constant increase in taxing of the consumption
- cartel on the telecomunication market
- cartel on the energies market,
- most expensive banking system in Europe
- currency rate of CZK / EUR often lowers the income for anybody relying on export

etc.

that of course brings also:

- constant increase in the rental prices
- constant increase in the price for one's grocery bill

etc. etc.

Not to mention that things like electronics or designer clothing are usually 30 - 100 pct. more expensive as compared to Western Europe

During the same time, the wages went up maybe 40 pct. (without taking into account inflation) and pensions practically won't pay for the food on your table, unless shared in a couple, or you live in your own property or, in the local case, more likely in a subsided place that you rent (the old model from before 1989 still applies).

Most expensive things and the major cost from the limited income most people have here are the basic costs of living.

i was in Panama recently and were there also 5 years ago.
things have changed quite a bit, everyone in Panama City have a brand new car, traffic was worse than ever..
Ocean front is built up, very expensive ocean view apartments of which many were un-occupied (but since the buildings are financed with laundry money, they dont care..)
Fast food is popular, McDonald delivers on a moped.
Locals are becoming westernized and are demanding better lifestyle.
Average income is up, not unreasonable to make $1k - $2k per month and many jobs pay much more.
Everybody has at least 2 smartphones.
Generally I would say long term Panama is not the place to consider retirement on a limited budget.
