Sniping a domain name

A model I know, doesn't own her name as her domain name. I checked the whois, and discovered the info is all wrong. My understanding is that incorrect whois info is cause for cancelation / dismissal.

Does anyone know how I can "snipe" this domain name away? Either to get it canceled and then re-register it? Or disput it?

No. You can buy it from the seller or upon drop.

you could complain to the registrar who will then just send a message to the owner of the domain to fix their whois

You're not going to get the domain just because the WHOIS info is fake. People fake it all the time and they just get told by their registrar to change the info to their actual address.

The registrar probably doesn't give a fuck unless you tell them.

Wow, what a shitty way to be thinking you can steal a domain.

The domain is owned by the model's ex-manager and he owes her tonnes of money. Anyway to get the domain from him we can...

Unless the domain is trademarked you have no way of legally getting the domain other than buying it from them or waiting until its dropped. She could spend the money to take him to court for using the domain in bad faith if its got content of hers and is earning from it. However, if he has any type of contract that gave him the right to do that you will still be screwed.

Glad you clarified that. By your initial post, it seemed like you were trying to screw the model (in the figurative sense ).

Interesting article here concerning use of likeness: http://www.citmedialaw.org/legal-gui...keness-another

You can report him here, but I doubt anything will come of it. http://wdprs.internic.net/ Even in the event ICAAN took action, eventually the domain would just drop, it would not be awarded to the person who reported it.

I've seen so many solo models have issues with their program or manager and just create a new site with a variation of their name or prefix adjective, I would go that route rather than wasting a bunch of effort on the domain. Unless of course the model is willing to make a deal where she forgives the money owed to her in lieu of transferring the domain to her.

you can report it as invalid whois. Nothing much will happen except the registrar will force them to put valid info.

As much as it may suck, that doesn't really matter. They are two completely separate issues.

It would probably be easier to step in and just to pay him a sum, granted he is a reasonable person and just upset with the model. A lot of times this type of situation can get out of hand. I helped a model in a similar situation, where the ex-manager/webmaster literally put a $10 million price tag on the domain just to be spiteful, but I got him down to about a grand. Still didn't think it was worth that much even, but it's sometimes easier to just pay up and move on.

If all else fails, register HIS name and make a trade!

I would email him pretending to be a third party. Tell him your grandma just passed away and you'd like to make her a memorial website and her name is the model's name. Tell him you really would like the domain, but don't have much money. Offer him $250 and tell him that's all you have, and then wait.

The ironic part is that she has actually paid twice for the domain. The first ex-manager screwed her over and she bought it from him, and had it transferred to her now second ex-manager who is now screwing her over again.

Yes, it's a pattern, and yes, she is a bitch to work with and probably deserves it. But she did pay for it, and she should have control of it.

Hmmm, that leads me to believe that there is more to the story.
