I need your help GFY (organizing sites categories)
I have some serious problem and since this place used to be filled with genius people perhaps someone has some good advice for me.
I'm building something big and one part of it requires divide various websites links into categories. I have no problem with adult categories of links, there are only few hundreds of those and quite easy to sort them by niche. But I've got problem with mainstream links. I would like to gather as many categories as it would fulfill the urge to put any link possible into its own category that would match it very clearly but at the same time I would not like to have 1000s of categories and sub-categorizes like big web directories have ( e.g. DMOZ etc) I would like to have up to a few hundreds of categories and only one level of subcategory or no subcategories at all. e.g. Food & Drinks -Food -Drinks or -Drinks and thats all... The question is how to efficiently gather them all. Digging several popular directories and then trying to merge and organize them into one list? For exaple were would go GFY.com site? "adult webmaster forum"? That's very clear but too specific. I would put it more into category like "web development" or "webmaster resources" or "adult community" but those are not that clear... and if I would go for "adult webmaster" forum then I need also a list of such specific categories for all other links, that would be too extreme task to gather such a list and to make it complete, am I right? Then I think better would be to use something more general like "webmaster resources" but again how to gather complementary list and do not spend years for this task? There are many sites that are very specific but they don't fit in popular categories. How to gather complementary list of categories that will fulfill 99% of websites. How to organize this stuff efficiently. Perfectly would be 100 categories, but even 1000 would be ok. but 10000 would be huge mess and pointless. I need to gather the 99% complete list prior to further development. Help me!!! I'm almost there but this thing depresses me. ![]() |
