Is there flea medicine for dogs

...that actually works. I have been buying flea med from my vet and it is in a pill form that is supposed to keep fleas off for a month and in fact seems to work for around a week and according to the vet he should not take more than one pill per month. The Vet claims that it is the best on the market and though I can't remember the name of it right now...if it is the best then they do not make anything that actually works.

BTW...I called another Vet that is local and he told me that Frontline is the very best...which is not what I am buying from the other Vet.

I'm agreeing with your other Vet who says Frontline is the very best. Been using it for years with my dogs, I only have to apply it once every 3 months (although it can be applied monthly).

Frontline worked for my parents' flea bitten mutts. Just gotta make sure you wait out the lifespan of any eggs in the area.

nothing works for me, I've tried them all. If you have a large yard and it's wet they will always find a place to hide.

All I do these days is give him a bath, mow the lawn and live with the fact that my dog has fleas.

I have my yard sprayed and I give my dogs a heartworm pill that has a flea preventative in it. I can't say that I have ever seen fleas on my mutts.

I use the Comfortis pill on my dog. Florida is flea-central and that is the only thing that's worked... especially since the dog is always in the pool so the topical treatments wash off. I've had friends use it when their dogs already had fleas and the sprays, bombs, etc. weren't getting rid of the live ones or the eggs and they were so happy they made the switch.

Just got a 6pack of Advantage 2 from amazon.com for $56 for my florida mutt. It works, flea baths weren't doing a damn thing.

Once again I'm gonna promote the magic of food grade DE. 2 acres, 6 cats, 4 dogs, 12 chickens, not one single flea. Mix 1/2 teaspoon DE earth in each bowl of their food. Do this everytime you feed them. This will keep them worm free also. To get rid of fleas and keep them off dust them down once a month with the same DE earth. Sprinkle it around their bedding and any other areas they frequent if you can once a month. Trust me this shit works. I don't use any chemicals on my pets or lawn anymore. just this DE. As I cut the grass I pull a spreader with it. Takes about 5 bags to cover 2 acres. Cost me like $65 a month to keep all insects out. chemicals would cost me double or triple that and not be as effective.

Frontline WORKS but it only treats fleas on the animals, you also need to treat the home and outside.

For the outside of our home we use Cutter Bug Free Backyard, it works great for upto 3 months, then we re-spray, it costs about $10 per container and is good for upto 2000 sqft.

For inside the home we use a spray called Precor 2000+ and one can will treat around 2000 sq ft of property space, but you need to do a re-application 7-10 days later and then it lasts for a good 6+ months (Cost per can is around $22) Precor is a professional grade.

You should also wash your pets bedding, in flea shampoo.

We do the above every 6-12 months and all 3 of our dogs and cat have been flea free for years...

Advantage or Advantage Multi. Accept no substitutes. The beach is notorious for fleas and we have not had a flea here in years. Advantage #1.

I use Advantix 2, and I've never seen a bug of any kind on my dog.

Frontline gave him a crusty scab on the application spot.

Don't give your dog heartworm stuff unless they have been tested first; you could kill them. And Advantix is more for ticks than fleas. If fleas are the issue, Advantage or Advantage Multi is the way to go.

You might want to also consider using CapStar (http://www.capstarpet.com/) - it's a pill that starts acting within 30 minutes of ingestion and will kill 99% of the fleas on your animal. However, it is only active in their system for 24 hours. And it's safe enough to give to dogs or cats - every day if need be. It's pretty amazing. A 6 pack runs around $40.

You might want to use this to kill the fleas already on your animal, then a topical such as frontline as a preventative.

Nope, not a one. Before I started this treatment method I would have anywhere from 5 to 10 fire ant mounds at any one time.

Choker is absolutely correct. Here is some additional information on DE:
