Come on, you guys haven't even begun to scratch the surface yet.

Nice to see White Heat mentioned, and that Cagney hasn't been forgotten.

I'll also add in Captains of the Clouds, another Cagney film.

Sahara with Humphrey Bogart. In fact anything with Bogart.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939)

1956 was a great year, brought Godzilla to the world.

The Flying Saucer (1950)

I haven't actually seen this one yet, but I see it's going to be on TCM next Saturday, have my PVR set to record it.

Sunset Boulevard, yes... forgot that one.

The Lady Vanishes

Dr. Jeckyll, Mr. Hyde - it's silent. I watched it recently and it was captivating. A true piece of movie-making gold.

What a great thread Chris - definitely love all the Universal Monster films of which you mentioned Frankenstein (my favorite of all of them).

Citizen Kane is up there for sure

Casablanca

Big Sleep

Ben Hur

Wizard of Oz

Gone with the Wind (which is still the top box office film once you count for inflation)

1939 was arguably the greatest year in history for movies. Most years have 2 or 3 really oscar-worthy entries, a few have 4 or 5.

1939 had TEN. Plus several more solid contenders. I think most people today really don't grasp that, the sheer magnitude of the movie lineup from that particular year.

I'll add another to my list that I watched the other night.

The Desert Fox

Always wanted to see it, never got around to it until recently. Excellent portrayal of Rommel by James Mason.

I think I've seen 95% of the movies listed... they're all excellent to great... mine would be (off the top of my head):

Casablanca
The Devil and Daniel Webster
Public Enemy
Singin' in the Rain
I Am A Fugitive From a Chain Gaing
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
The Fountainhead
City Lights
The Crimson Pirate

Shit there's no way to post in this thread without spending hours at it... lol

They Drive By Night
It Came From Outer Space
War of the Worlds
North by Northwest
The Brain From Planet Arous
The Time Machine

Fuckit or I'll never stop

:D
