Attention anyone concerned with ICM's newest TLD applications - what you can do

First, you all should at least pay attention to if not participate in ICANN's Application Comment Forum. It's free to sign up and you can comment on any of the applications. It should at least be entertaining.

As far as formal objections, you can file a "limited public interest" objection or possibly a community objection. Fees for them are absolutely ridiculous though - like a few thousand dollars non-refundable admin fees whether you reach a hearing or not and another several thousand minimum if you reach a hearing. ICANN's explanation of these is here.

I'm not sure yet if ICANN's review process for applications comes with a strict criteria of it being significantly different than other existing extensions - still need to look into that, but the only way a formal objection can be filed on that basis is by the owner of the similar TLD. ICM wouldn't do that to themselves.

One concern you all might want to have - sure with only .xxx it'd be a hard case to make to force adult sites onto it, but with multiple options, mainstream/government might assume you should be satisfied and not feel that you're being pigeonholed or whatnot. Given there are some forces in government that would love nothing more than to wipe adult off the face of the internet, it wouldn't surprise me if these new adult TLDs do pass that they might further that agenda.
