Months ago there was talk about HTML5 solving the issue with playing video on
mobile devices. I worked with it a little but found that the video needed to be in
3 different formats to implement it fully for all phones.

Anyone using it with success?

Anyone think that skipping HTML5 and instead providing a link to mp4 video is better?

I just use an mp4 with Videojs.com and not come across anything that it won't play on.

I don't see using it as realistic for me.

I have a limited amount of server space I can afford and I'm trying to compete with
sites with tons of content. To need 3x as much space is not going to work out for me.

I prefer linking to the mp4 directly because I prefer to use the mobile devices default video player as opposed to much smaller in line/browser playback...

Both, with one file. Use the html5 <video> tag to embed your mpeg4, and have a direct link to the file. According to one source, IE9+,Chrome 4+, Safari 3.2+ and Android 2.1+ will show the embedded mp4. All others click the link.

I expect that in time the other browsers will support mpeg4 via <video>. You can also add Flash to play the mpeg4 when the browser can't play it directly since Flash can play mpeg4.

Html5 video is a pain the the fucking ass... It's suppose to make things easier but I don't see how needed 3 formats makes things easier than just having one .flv file. But they're pushing to get rid of flash go figure

Give it time. In 1996, Linux got IPv6 support. On April Fool's day 2001, I posted that the internet was being switched to IPv6 and it would be down for about an hour or two to switch it. In 2006, Windows got usable IPv6. In 2012, some ISPs will start to support it. That's sixteen years from being supported by server operating systems to actually being used. HTML 5 may take a year or two to stabilize with specific codecs.

yes correct fallback is important if its a responsive design you are building, less so if you are providing just a pure mobile option. encoding .com is also good as alterrnative to zencoder. also a good sniffer, iphoners have more money than android owners , cos they have to pay stiff monthlies to own it. dont forget the tel: and sms: html tags as well to launch their phone or text services rather than send them to a stupid credit card payment page.

I'm running the JW Player Wordpress plugin using HTML5 and a Flash fallback... using only an MP4 file and it works great. Tested on both iOS and Android. Works perfectly.

Just use JW player with .mp4 and lighttpd

It has html5 fallback, so when a user or device doesn't have flash it will automatically play in html5

It works in all browsers and all modern smartphones (iphone, android, ipad etc)

no need to have multiple .mp4 versions
