http://www.viddler.com/v/18097f92

pretty cool and definitely needs practice to do, but didn't it used to be about turn tables or spinning?

Every tween with a mac thinks he is a DJ now. What a joke.

Here is a real DJ showing unique SKILLS

Now almost every big electronic producer is a DJ. Calvin Harris and Avicci both suck at DJing but want to cash in on the popularity of the tracks they produced.

If there's not 2 turntables involved, you're not a DJ.

I have been shooting weddings all summer long and I'm blown away at the number of wedding DJs who just create a playlist in iTunes and hit play for upwards of $2500 for the night.

Press Play DJ's are the worst. So many of the one's that even do have the skills still show up with a pre-recorded track so they can fuck off in the booth. Including many of the bigger names that command at least $15k a booking.

The general public doesn't understand yet DJing like that. It's called controllerism.

The skill is in the preparation of the samples and arranging it so it can be played that way. Something that can take weeks or months to put together. Similar to this

Cool video. Too bad most electronic DJs don;t do that when they "play live". I've seen many big name DJs "playing" for 10-15 minutes without using the headphones around their necks. Total garbage and yeah, I used to spin vinyl so i know you can't mix live without headphones.

True. I'm not defending the "push play" djs which are total fakes like you say. But it's a shame that real controllerists who work hard are put in the same category.

Exactly. Madeon and Porter Robinson are two of the best at using controllers imo.

I watched Steve Angello from the Swedish House Meatballs close out Wet Republic in vegas last year and he was just standing there smiling half the time doing nothing. It was utterly lame and I felt cheated.

It used to be about turntable and spinning......CD transports made the process even easier and controllers even more so.

I'm not knocking the guys that are very creative and truly excel, in turntables heyday, they likely would have excelled at those too.

But it really isn't is hard as it used to be.

I dj'd using 1210's and there is a real learning curve from simple beat matching to scratching and other creative tricks, it took me two years at least to learn the different scratches.

Now I use an Akai APC, mpk88 and various vsts. Its night and day how easy it is to crank out a sample remix. With the samples in place.....5 mins and I could have something pretty reasonable that you wouldn't have heard before. A DJ set can be original in terms of arrangement and beat matched flawlessly in no time at all.

I miss the days when a DJ might have a beat matching or mix catastrophe in their booths lol

I started off with two used Technics LS2010's, a 4ch yamaha mixer, an fbt amp, 4 250w 3 way vox speakers and a dj70 sampler. I made some good coin for a few years then i got lazy, sold it all to some kid that read the newspaper add and showed up at my door with his dad and took everything.

It's a new trend for DJ's to move away from turntables (even virtual ones) and towards consoles & controllers only.

Check this out
