If you have a cracked number plate on your car and you want to replace it with a new one using the same reg details, do you guys over in the US have to take proof of ownership of the car and ID like a passport ot drivers licence before the garage will replace it ?

We take the proof of insurance,drivers license and the old plate and pay 55 bucks and get a new one here

Every state is different. Each one has it's own set of regulations, requirements, etc... Hell, here in Florida, you don't even need a front license plate at all..... Which is sweet becuase I think front plates screw up the looks of nice sports cars. Also, you don't need to pass a smog or roadworthyness inspection in Florida, like you have to do in a lot of Northeastern states. You never need to show passport, as far as I know, and states vary as to whether you need to show proof of insurance.

So you need to ask regarding a specific state.

Also, in most states, you just get the plate from the department of motor vehicles, and put the plate on yourself

ah so the same as over here in the UK more or less but ours is A tad cheaper we pay around £14-17 which is around $22 - $27 for a standard plate unles you want something snazy then you pay a bit more.

Its just always baffled me why you have to take ID with you specially when you take the car to a garage and they change the plate while you wait. Its not like you are changing the reg details or anything

Now i could live with rules like that lol, so if you enter another state with your car and they have diff rules to what your own state has can you get pulled by the cops for not abidding by that states rules ?

Over here you just go to a garage and tell them the license plate number. Costs about 20 euros.

If you are just driving through another state, then you are not subject to their licensing rules. However if you reside there for a given length of time, (which also varies, form several weeks, to over 6 months out of the year), you are considered a resident of that state, and must transfer your Driver's license and registration over to that state, and follow their rules.

If you have houses in several states then it's generally whichever one you spend the most time in out of the year.

yep u never used to have to take any ID when you replaced your number plate over here in the UK until about 2003 i think

Its suposed to stop vehicle crime lol But they just take the number plates from cars now, My daughters second hand car which she purchased had both of the plates stolen

wow so that could be pretty crazy if you travel and stay in diff States for a job or something

The garage has to keep a record of who they sell plates to now. Most frequent thing false ones are used for is filling a car at a petrol station then driving off without paying due to how expensive fuel is now.

Did see a car in London one day that had FUCK YOU RED KEN as the numberplates just after the CC Zone was created so they could avoid the charge

I almost put a logo on my new plate with the words UP YOUR FTO and also an FTO badge instead of the country badge but decided not to cause i just know i would get pulled and get told that it was not a valid plate
