Could the percentage be less than today if were not for all of those other things mentioned? Sure. Could the adult business, industry wide, helped to prevent this by using DRM or other technology? Yes. Could affiliate programs not given away access to their entire members area helped slow the spread? Of course.

People do not buy porn to past the time. The increase in surfers, between 2000 and today, would replace any losses and then some.

To get an idea, think about prior to the Internet and all the forms of porn that had to be paid for to get some idea of the size. Retail stores, not production revenue.

Hmm I dunno. They'd possibly be complaining about *something*, but they'd be making good (which may not be the same as your good, admittedly) money. Adult, specifically SE traffic, died overnight for me with Penguin. Killed it stone fucking dead, now at 1/15th of what I was doing 12 months ago - now, Google would obviously have still changed their algos over the years obviously, but I just can't compete in Google when they are geared up to give the surfers want they want, regardless of how the now top SERPs got to be able to give the surfer all that free stuff (which I have no real beef with, aside from the occasional rant when in a bad mood) in the first place.

I know one thing - rewind to 2005, when I went full-time, and I'd do things VERY differently as regards to acquiring/keeping traffic sources, and wouldn't be hurting as much as I am now

Piracy is illegal, it's theft and it should be stopped regardless of profits at either end of the equation. Making money from Piracy aggravates the act of piracy leading to stiffer potential penalties.
