I want to watch a great SciFi tonight - which one

Seen all the famous ones so don't bother mentioning those. There must be more out there.

Outlander was much better than I thought it would be. Only had a limited run in theatres, but it has been shown a lot on Syfy recently so you may have already seen it.

Not really SciFi but Brotherhood of the Wolf is a GREAT movie that most people aren't familiar with.

It is more of a buddy action movie set in the years prior to the French Revolution. Everyone I have recommended it to has loved it.

IF you like kind of bizarre stuff: LEXX (the movies, not the TV show). Especially liked the 3d movie (Eating Pattern) with Rutger Hauer.

Split second, District 9

Not exactly SciFi:
Underworld, Night Watch, Day Watch

If anime is ok: GITS innocence

Not really unknown: Pitch Black, Chronicles of Riddick, Videodrome, Strange Days

I also vote District 9 if you haven't seen it.

It depends on what sort of Sci Fi you like but if you like story driven stuff vs space ships, I also suggest:

Children of Men - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0206634/
Never Let Me Go - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1334260/ (totally marketed wrong and made to look like romantic comedy when it was sci fi)

I'll second Brotherhood of the Wolf. Ironically, it's one of the best looking period movies I've seen. The costuming was fucking insane, but I don't know how the CGI will hold up all these years later.

Sunshine is one of my favorites also.

Difficult question because I always have the notion everybody has heard of all these flicks, only I know not everyone has. Depends on how steeped in SF you are.

Yeah, I am a fan of that one - you really can't put it into a genre since it is basically several genres mashed into one fun flick. Part martial arts, part monster sci-fi, buddy action... and it has a Monica Bellucci nude scene... and that is worth the price of admission alone in my book.

Zardoz is one of my fave classic sci-fi.

What didn't make sense? I loved it.

I've been watching the series Battlestar Galactica. It's not fantastic, but it's enjoyable.

I also thought prometheus was better than I expected it to be. Some parts seemed forced but I thought it was an interesting effort and addition to the aliens line.

Clever story concepts, and I liked that it did not have a happy ending.

There are too few really good science fiction movies. Most get drecked in the committee process.

So, read some of the books instead. There have been some truly great books written in the past 15 years.

I thought it was good, a lot of people that were unhappy with it had expected it to be the next Aliens movie.

Moon and Primer!

I especially liked Primer. As a story its excellent and you have to pay really close attention to figure out what is going on. It's also hard to watch because it's a super low budget movie (only $8000), but really good sci-fi.

I hated Biuckaroo Bonzai (boring to me) and Fifth Element (all style no substance but good music). Johnny Pneumonic? Yuck..! I thought it was a mess of a film. Although I *love* Dena Meyer. Always a babe.

Good time travel films:

Time After Time
, though there's not really much scifi beyond the initial time travel. The Time Machine (1960 version). Time Bandits. The Final Countdown.

Good computers in control or taking control films:

Forbin Project, Demon Seed, Logan's Run (worth watching anyway, for Jenny Agutter). I used to love Westworld, but I saw it again recently and found it unbearably slow. The premise is great though, so it could stand to be remade.

Enjoyable weird/low-budget/cult films (if you're in the right mood):

Dark Star, Night of the Comet, Terrorvision.

All of the above are pretty old - 70s/80s - since the OP has probably seen most/all new recent films.

Timecop and The Faculty are two enjoyable 90s films. Of the last decade, Idiocracy is great, Aeon Flux gets a hard time from comic-book guys at IMDB but it's not bad, Surrogates is pretty good, and another 'avatar' related movie, Gamer, which I expected to be terrible, is mindlessly enjoyable.

Some good suggestions in this thread, and some I haven't seen that I'm going to check out.

However a lot of people were just unhappy because of the dumb, annoying characters behaving stupidly and/or unprofessionally (ie, unrealistically), the parts of the movie that went nowhere, or made no sense or weren't explained, and the pointless use of Guy Pearce, with the worst make-up effects of any movie in history.

People had very high expectations, and it was a big let down.

Both good. "Somewhere in Time" with Christopher Reeve is good too. Less Sci-fi and more mush though, it's still excellent, and Richard Matheson wrote the screenplay based on his book.

Forbin project is one of my all-time favourite classic movies. Great story, great acting, really cool computer. I think I was 5 years old when I saw it and this movie got me hooked (and terrified) of computers.

Logans Run! Loved this one too. Saw it 14 times. The effects are cheesy by today's standards but it doesn't really matter and somehow makes the movie even better.

I forgot about outland. very good call. Sean Connery at his best. If you want to see an old classic scifi which I think influenced a lot of films over the years including star trek. Forbidden Planet. A more recent film I always enjoyed was Serenity. If you want a lighter comedy type a sleeper is 1999 Galaxy Quest. not bad starting Tim Allen.
