I wouldn't want to be in a tall building when Hurricane Sandy hits!

Meteorologist warns: "Raritan Bay and New York Bay and the south end of Manhattan are especially susceptible to rising water if the center of Sandy comes ashore in New Jersey or south. Much as we saw in Irene, it is potentially a monstrous problem due to the threat to NYC infrastructure and transportation. There are tough decisions ahead for the Mayor and his people.

Right now, the odds favor that southern track. The threat from this situation is serious as a heart attack for anybody near the rising water.

Then there's the wind which is expected to be MUCH higher than Irene at the skyscraper level. The city will also have to be thinking about the threat to people in tall buildings"

I'm really hoping it doesn't track up to us in NB (which is next door to Maine for non-canadians) cause this province is surrounded 3/4 by ocean and a lot is at sea level when in-land.

The hurricane is a threat to New York. New York is a beautiful city with long bridges like the Brooklyn Bridge.

We got nailed here in Halifax about 10 years ago and, ever since, no one really blows off a tropical storm threat here now.

Coastal areas are a typical mess when these storms hit.

We were livin' just outside of Halifax (Lr. Sackville) when Hurricane Blanche hit in July/75. It snapped the oil rig loose in the harbour and sent it drifting towards one of the Halifax/Dartmouth bridges. They managed to stop it just a few hundred yards away with the tug boats.

Blanche hit just as the tide was coming in, which made things worse. The basin quickly rose and the Bedford River flowed in reverse inland...flooding out Sunnyside Mall that day.

I still remember it well.
