Fact: 92% of people here who cry about piracy have downloaded at least 1000 mp3s

Without paying for it.
Another 44% also downloaded games and/or software.

So what i'm saying is you're not in a position to cry if you have less sales because of tubes.

I admit it, I do download MP3s. But the music industry deserves it in my opinion and they are better insulated to make a profit even with piracy. Where as porn, the same can't be said because we have less of a market base to work with, limited advertising streams because we are "Adult". The gov't will bend over backwards to stop piracy in the music/movie industry but they will do nothing to help us. So piracy hits the adult industry harder than it would the music industry or even hollywood. You don't see musicians or producers going out of business. They just earn less but still make a killing.

Everyone who has the intelligence to download pirated stuff does.

This will be the case until copyright theft and physical theft are dealt with in the same way.

Steal a DVD from HMV you do time!

I once spent a couple of hours trying to figure out amazon and itunes. I wanted to spend money. Gave up in frustration because of all the stupid artificial limits (like geographical location) which prevented me from buying anything.

I'm not advocating piracy, but it's usually far easier to download something off X site than try to legally acquire it.

I used to buy of itunes as well. But like you, I got tired of the limitations they put on geographical locations so now I just download it from other sites

If I remember correctly, Amazon waited until I'd selected a number of songs and proceeded to the checkout before letting me know that I couldn't actually buy them because I was outside the USA. Would be nice if they could have told me that earlier, geoIP would signal that I'm not in the USA.

Funny how people say the same about adult websites after being hooked on tons of cross sales of hundreds of dollars

Impressive statistics. I especially enjoy the sources you've cited. It's nice to see people conducting real research into the piracy issue these days. I hope you're rewarded well for your in-depth study.

That was really annoying how they wait until we are ready to pay before telling us we can't buy that specifc song. That's one of the reasons I got sick and tired of "big brother" telling me what I can or can't buy so now I download what I want ,when I want

I must be one of the 2% as I bought my Photoshop license. Software is hard to pirate these days anyways with most bigger companies utilizing online verification of serial keys.

I can understand why content producers and paysite owners might get their knickers in a twist about piracy. But affiliates? Your job is to make money by delivering traffic and conversions.

If market conditions dictate that one type of product is no longer making money, then it's your job to move on to a different market where you can put your skills to work and keep making money. Not to keep flogging a dead horse and complaining about the past or factors that are completely out of your control.

Right. Most software is usually available within 24 hours after launch on TPB.

would be interesting to see how many designers will post a photo of the box with gfy in the background.... would take only a min and would be a good PR for those that do...

so which designer is up to the challenge?

You have a point Frank and you're probably right. There are a couple differences though. One is that most people hurt in our industry don't have millions in the bank. The second is that in our industry it's basically open season and a free-for-all. People don't even think twice before stealing porn whereas they do with software, music, or mainstream films because they know there's a slight chance they could be getting a letter from their ISP. Hell in our industry the thieves are the big players. You have businesses making a business of stealing from others in the industry. It's not quite the same as a consumer downloading an mp3 besides with the moral argument.

Actually legitimate affiliates have lost more than content producers. Content producers at least got some branding (lube) along with the revenue hit (the screw). Legitimate affiliates only got the screw as conversions went south. You have a point but think about what you are saying. Many of these affiliates will become pirates making things even worse for everyone. "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" I'm truly shocked that more affiliates aren't turning to the dark side so to speak. What's happening now is that affiliates are essentially standing still and smiling while they get kicked in the balls. You have to wonder how long that will last.

I've never downloaded nor used pirated software, and I don't download illegal mp3s, although I have a huge legally purchased library of music, including a few thousand vinyl LPs - I like digital, but I was raised on analog; and long before becoming a filmmaker I was a musician, and so I was opposed to Napster and their ilk from day one.

Many of the people I know who actually pay to produce their own content as I do, share my views about piracy, and believe that artists deserve to be rewarded for their creations, not people who steal or otherwise devalue an artist's works by illegally sharing it or otherwise violating the artists copyrights.

I've already given up whining about piracy, what's the fucking point anymore. It's like Don Quijote.. Just adapt or die. I adapted by changing my environment I work in (ie. not-adult).

..and yet, I don't condone piracy and have not downloaded pirated software/music in 15+ years. Also, no need anymore really.. Spotify's there for my musical needs, and if I can't find something there, CD cost next to nothing. I'm part of the 8%!

I downloaded lots of stuff in the early times I had my broadband connection, but I've felt better over the last few years knowing I'm putting money in the pockets of the people who make the stuff I love.

---and I'm not going to rationalize why some corporation deserves to be ripped off and another doesn't, like one poster here.

They've set a price for their goods. If I don't have the money, I don't steal it.

I've paid for everything I use. However, some of the software I've been using is rather old - Cute FTP, photoshop, and ACDSee come to mind. In fact, I had to buy ACDSee again to install it on my new computer here.

I've also paid for all of my music too, either through Rhapsody or iTunes or from my CD collection. Movies too, all movies on DVD.

I sleep fine at night.

So you will decide what you can steal, and how much from anyone then.... I better not leave my wallet lying around your house, in case you decide that I can afford to have you steal it.

The government did pretty much nothing. It was all done by the industry themselves.

Dumbest part of the post. Don't see them going out of business? Seriously? They go broke and go out of business ALL THE TIME! On what planet do you live? Do you have any idea how many acts never get past the first release because free downloads erase any profitability they might have had?

Oh.... wait. You live on the same planet with the people that say that "Porno producers make millions, and they aren't going out of business. It's a huge industry. My stealing content might just make them earn less but they will still make a killing"

I think I give up.....
