someone at work got me this for christmas last year, best present I got that wasn't actual whisky

I think you're paying more for the age and rarity (and the wooden box) than the actual taste experience. as far as really good Irish Whiskies go, you can't really go wrong than the Redbreast (also by Middleton).

My current favourite is this Balblair I got about a year ago (makin it last)

I was once at a Johny Walker event trying out their products, and honestly their $200 bottle tastes no better than their $20 bottle... and that was after a long sales pitch of how their $200 bottle is aged for 50 years in oak barrels or whatever...

I guess it must be an acquired taste or just bullshit marketing...

Traditionally yes, most use older Bourbon Barrels as I think Bourbon makers only use the barrels once, because they want that new Toasted Oak Vanilla Flavor that it imparts. And Sherry Casks. Most use a blend of the two.

More recently Scotch Makers have experimented with Madeira Casks, Old Port Casks, and old Wine Casks. This is admittedly the first Rum Barrel Whiskey I have seen.

Actually, the Balvenie Caribbean is finished in Rum Casks, which is why it is called "Caribbean", just like the Balvenie Portwood is finished in Port casks.

But go ahead and get anal if you want to, you just should do a little more homework first.

Cool thread, nice whiskey's here. Whenever you feel like it, give this one a try ;-) It's a nice one. Lots of peat and salt. Just got myself a bottle

i do enjoy a good whiskey, usually a single malt Scotch of some sort.
sometimes i drink it straight, but more often with a dash of cold water.
never on the rocks though.

I have always been an "Irish" drinker and fly over to Belfast 3 or 4 times a year and always visit http://www.bushmills.com/ every time. Best "Pub" in the UK.

So I bought a few 1.75 bottles of JW Red, and decided that was some super nasty shit that needed cran in order to be consumed. Then I figured maybe it was the grade I had an issue with, so I bought a couple Black bottles.

After quite a bit of "research" I decided I'm not a big scotch fan. I don't like the burnt barrel taste that seems to be synonymous with scotch.

A friend introduced me to Woodford Reserve and I've been drinking that ever since. Very good tasting bourbon IMO.

As far as scotch goes, if you like those sweet vanilla/carmel notes from the Bourbon, you might like something like Bowmore Darkest. trying the blended scotches , most use some lowland malts, which I find to be a bit raw. I flip back and forth between scotch and bourbon, I like them both. What I don't really like is Rye, which probably makes me a bad Canadian.

Their distillery is a few miles from my house in Woodford Co Kentucky. My favorite as well.

I totally agree, though. There is nothing like Irish Whiskey. My favorites are the Jameson special reserves. Smooth and worth every penny.
