Need a powerful wireless card for laptop .. or a repeater? For deployed soldier..
My sisters husband is deployed and apparently the wifi signal completely sucks. He's not very technically inclined, at all, and my sister keeps saying she wants to get him a repeater. I said to her -- a more powerful wireless adapter would be a far better solution in terms of being easier to set up and use..
Who makes the best wireless adapter? Hopefully usb.. with an external directional antenna? I thought that you gurus would know, so I am asking you. Thanks! |

I've ordered from these guys:
rokland.com They have some great long range wifi and their support is very helpful. I would ask them what would be the most appropriate for your situation.

Alright so I recommended this one: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...rkey=E399-1009 because I think if he gets a usable signal at all with the internal laptop card, almost any external antenna will be good enough. It's not b/g/n but does anyone ever use b at all anyway??
Then here's this which is better, but I think he may have problems installing the god damned thing.. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...9SIA1AZ0DT6543 but it's supposed to be very powerful AND sensitive |

I've got the alpha 1 watt and the software wasn't too bad to install. The only trick is you might need to disable the windows wireless manager and use the alpha one instead, I can pick up about 30 wifi points from my house with it, and only about 5 with my built in. You're probably right that if he gets a weak single now with his built in card, anything will be a huge improvement. Also with either unit you could swap the antenna for a better one for about $10 later if needed. Might not help you make a choice here, but probably either one of those USB wifi adaptors will work well.
