iphones find my iphone app

Anyone ever actually recover a stolen phone using it? It shows the area the phone is in but that is just a pretty broad area. I know when i tested it when i installed it it was a good 4-5 blocks off of the actual location.

I already put it in lost mode dont really wanna wipe it if there is any real way to get it back ;/

I've worked with a few clients who have successfully retrieved their devices.

It depends on the type of building the device is in (walls, etc). Sometimes it is worth the effort to wait 30 minutes and retry the GPS tracking.

Depending on your *ahem* relationship with local police (ymmv), sometimes you can get the device back within just a hour or two and decide from there whether charges will be pressed.

My mom left her Nexus in a store and using Prey she was able to locate and recover it.

Only thing I've used find my iPhone for is finding it here when I lost it in the house.

Had an iPad stolen, and never recovered it. They probably just turned it off for a while until I stopped bothering to try to locate it.

I attached mine to a helium balloon and launched it in to space with a camera attached to it. When it fell back to earth I tracked it down using find my iphone.

Yes and no. I've used it to find my misplaced phone a few times.

My girl had her phone stolen and we tracked it down and the cops did nothing. I gave them the address and everything. I could even see which room the phone was in. Useless cops.

Send a SMS/TXT offering a reward for return. Say will pay $250 for return of phone. Then when the person arrives, ask to look at the phone and make it seem like your going for your wallet and just say thanks and walk away (don't pay the reward). Meet is a public place so if the cops are called you can prove its your phone.

Seems a lot of muggers like to wait for the phone to be actually in use with a call before taking it. That way they can get in and disable the find my phone app while they are running off. There are a few very important set up options you can put it in to stop apps being removed and the password required to turn off geo-loc etc.

well I do know that with any apple mobile device, you can only try the password 12 times, until it locks. The devices lock you out for longer and longer with each password attempt that is unsuccessful. ie, 5 min, 30 min, 3 hours, 16 hours then done.

When it is locked, it is basically a paperweight. You can restore them, but only at an apple authorized dealer.

or turned off iCloud. I believe they all need that one in order for it to work. (or most from what I have read)

That would be a spectacular way to get your ass beat down by the team of 5 big-ass black dudes that stole your phone to begin with, and maybe a shot to the liver with their .45.

if the sim card from the phone or tablet is removed doesnt that make any possibilty of retrieval impossible?
