Blu-Ray - Did it die off?

I don't have a DVD player and haven't for years. I got a Blu-ray DVD for x-mas and the giver was surprised I didn't have one. I have not looked at my friends electronic purchases but I thought this was one of those techs that never got going.

An SD/miniSD/microSD is something that you can touch and it's definitely better than monstrous optical dicks from the 20s century

It's hard to go back to discs when you get used to have a media server in your house with everything tucked away conveniently on hard drives so you can access it anywhere in your house immediately.

If I buy discs anymore it's just so I can rip it to a hard drive, then the disc gets put on a shelf and never touched again.

Connect your blu ray player to a 5.1 amplifier and speakers, a full HD projector, a screen of say 6 feet by 3 feet, put in a modern well made film you like, turn off the lights and hit play.

Then post here and tell us how it compares to a downloaded file watched on your Ipad

It feels like that. I have never watched a movie in BluRay. HD porn is the bomb but for a movie with a plot, I am not sure I care.

You can do the same by ripping the movie to a media server. Just substitute a htpc or equivalent for the blu-ray player.

Even if you pirate all your shit, you can still find high quality stuff in 1080p in DTS or better. Or if you're really determined to pirate there's even people uploading full uncompressed blu-ray rips.

I use mediabrowser and it is pretty cool.

Yes, and I'm selling my PS3 + Rock Band, 2 Guitars and 6 games.

The bluray player is no longer a perk of owning a PS3.

I've got this Harman Kardon thing, it's pretty sweet watching Band of Brothers on with a big ass screen. Excellent quality.

Don't own many blue-ray disc though, it'll probably die out since it's a physical device. but they have them on sale here and there so I pickup some classics from time to time

I buy Blu Rays for movies that I think "need" it, If you know what I mean? Like the Dark Knight Rises and things like that. Where there is good visuals that could benefit from it being higher quality I buy a Blu Ray.

If not I still get DVDs, but I rip them to a box now, and keep them on that, rarely use the disks after that.

I second this. We don't have a Blu-Ray player and honestly haven't really noticed the loss.

Blu Ray players are as fast as DVD now

Blu Ray players are cheap

Blu ray discs are superp quality

When your hard disc fails - goodbye to your movie collection

Blu rays discs have lots of extra features if you are really interested in cinema

Blu rays discs are now as cheap as DVDs

If you want to watch films in the future you might consider paying for films now

Downloading and storing films on hard drives costs money and time too. don't be s cheapskate.

I have Netflix and use it to discover alot of shows I hadn't seen before, but in reality it sucks because the content is very limited, and the image and sound quality sucks.

Blu Ray on the otherhand, is fantastic. Prestine Image, 7 channels of digital sound, and lots of bonus features. As a movie fan, I like listening to the directors commentary, or watching the making-of documentaries that come with almost every movie.

While I watch alot more digital downloads than I used to, I still buy my favourites on blu ray.

When a Blu Ray transfer is done right, it makes streaming HD look like shit in comparison.

Very true.

We've rented a few that was like looking through a window. Startlingly clear and vivid. The amount of detail is amazing.

Bandwidth isn't anywhere near being in a place to sustain that kind of quality in a large streaming market. You have to get it on disc.

I also like extras, and I hate liking a flick but then not be able to see extras, because I was watching it on Vudu streaming.

Especially with BR, you get extras a DVD purchase would normally not get you as well. IE: HD and SD versions, extra scenes, games and even complete copy of movie but with different camera angle.

Have never had a regular stand-alone DVD or blu-ray player.

I can't think of any movies I want to have permanently and that I would watch more than once. I've had a Netflix subscription for several years and don't see myself paying for a film unless I really, really, really want it.

I supose the great thing about Blu-ray is picture quality and sound if you have the set up for it

Why one would need DVD player, when most new TV sets have USB port and LAN and support playback of all formats? :D

Because there is not the bandwidth to support the quality required by true HD

(HD on the web is just a lie, like a model being teen )

If you like cinema (not TV ) then if you make the effort to see a true HD picture, which means on a very large expensive TV or HD projector, you will understand.

If you like cinema (not TV ) then if you make the effort to see a true HD picture, which means on a very large expensive TV or HD projector, you will understand.
My house is wired with cat6. Theres more than enough bandwidth to stream fully uncompressed blurays from my media server to every computer in the house. Each htpc is connected to a 7.1 receiver and then to a tv or projector by hdmi. I havent tried using a smart tv, but I've never had a need to since I keep a pc in every room that has a tv.

HD on the web is just a lie
Are you talking about streaming only?

cat5 or cat6, USB or even wireless N has more than enough bandwidth to stream bluray.
