PS3 YLOD - Anyone here fixed a kaput system?

My PS3 has got the the Yellow Light of Death. Was playing away and it went slow, then died completely.

I've been looking on youtube and forums, found some good info on how to reflow the board, I checked the power supply, which is fine, so must be the motherboard problem.

Anyone here done this themselves? I fixed my red ring of death xbox and that works fine now, now about a year later my ps3 decides to die on me

I'm going to get a slim, but want to fix this one aswell.

Any tips would be appreciated

If your MB went youre kinda screwed as the board attached to the blu ray disc drive is mated to that MB. You will need to replace both boards if thats the case. I am in the midst of repairing my PS3 as well. Bad blu-ray drive =/

I've followed some videos on youtube, and I'm down to the motherboard. The blu ray drive just popped off mine, couple of ribbon cables.

It's an old 40gb system so I had to search a bit for a break down guide, but got there in the end.

There is quite a few vids of people heating the motherboards and applying flux to try and fix the gpu/cpu areas of the board. So i'm going to give it a shot. Was just wondering if anyone had any first hand experience with fixing them.

Good luck fixing the blu ray drive

I don't know, I think it is atleast a year. But mine is pretty old, so no warranty.

My 40gb one was old aswell, but when i called Sony they came and collected it, and charged me a fee for a refurbished machine. Can't remember how much exactly mind you...

Yea ive read that works! Give it a shot, worst case scenario just fix it and then ebay it and buy yourself a new one. Thats what I plan on doing myself. It just sucks because I like having the backwards compatible PS3!

I've been waiting for mine to shit the bed, because the video is unviewable for 10 minutes until the system warms up.

I paid a lot to have mine fixed once but it broke again a month later. Had to buy a new one anyway and lost my save game data twice.

sounds like a bad connection on the board...once the board heats up and the metal contacts expand it creates the connection again.

That was good of them

I got the red ring of death a couple times on xbox within warranty and got a straight swap. This ps3 machine is 5 years (maybe more) old so no luck there. I have to say this lasted longer, than both xboxs combined.

I also had a red ring of death last year out of warranty, think there is a thread on here about it.

A new machine is tempting, but I have no idea what the big players are planning for e3 this year and if there might be something new by next xmas. Like an ps4 / xbox 720 or whatever coming out.

So, a Heat gun is on mu shopping list for the weekend, going to try heating the gpu/cpu areas up and applying some flux to see if the youtube videos work or not.

I'll give it a shot and report back.

What choopa phil said, I used to work in an electrical goods repair shop, never dealt with a console before though. This is quite common but with TVs and some other similar things, if the components are a lot easier to see, you could usually see dry joints etc on tvs and things like that, but I honestly can't here.

That sucks! This is why I want to save mine aswell, I'm so close to finishing GT on all levels I couldn't bare to lose the data. most other things I'd be cool with.

Not sure if there is a way save the data or not yet.

Update: Fixed it! Used the heat gun method at Roughly 350c/650f. Working fine again.

If anyone else has this happen, just go buy a heat gun for about $40, take it apart and follow a youtube video on your model.

Now I'm going to try finding some ways to keep it cooler.

I have a friend who quit his job and bought some $3k chip remover from China. He now makes his living repairing all sorts of consoles. Big money in fixing these things because people don't want to wait weeks shipping them off to Sony or Microsoft.
