How much are you paying your accountant ?

I mainly work offline now but I am still self employed and this year my accountant fees just went up by £30 pounds. Was paying £320 pounds per year now its gone up to £350 pounds per year. How much are you paying for your accountant or has the fees gone up as well ?

Also how many of you keep all your incomings and outgoings on computer ? or do u just use the old fashion way of paper like I do.
I only use the computer for submitting daily reports of my earnings to the company I work for which I do keep and also recieve on paper at the end of the month, my earnings from them. I also keep a record on paper of everything I have earned for each day which my accountant uses along with all the receipts ect

It's impossible to make that judgment without knowing more about his financial set up.

You are much better off paying a good accountant a fair wage for his work than paying the government for the faulty work you got done 'cheaply' by a bad accountant... Accountants are like coders, "cheap" is not what you really want even if it is what you think you want. I love when idiots like H&R Block advertise they will get you the 'maximum tax refund' - I wonder where they are when you get audited and it turns out you owe penalties and fines for shortcuts they took to make you feel like they saved you money. It's your liability, not theirs, so a bad accountant is gambling with you bankrolling them... not the other way around.

If they sign the prepared by, then they legally have to have a rep available in case of audit.

I file my own returns, but I did work at an accountants for 5 years, so know what I'm doing.
Self employed, not a company so nothing complicated.

And YOU have to pay for any mistakes they made or chances they took that come out during the audit. You are the house... he is only the dealer. When he loses, it comes out of your bank, not his - so he can take chances and look like a genius for years until you get audited and owe for anything he did along the way while he has virtually zero liability unless he did something egregiously illegal.

I am pretty sure this thread is confusing because some (and OP) are talking about accountants to do their personal taxes (you know those that we - you and me do by ourselves) and you are speaking about accountant for your business.

2 different things mixed up in this thread

We pay our guy around $1000 a year depending on ow many of our companies he prepares the accounts for, that being said, we also use him for random financial business stuff throughout the year so he cuts us a break on his fees for tax purposes.

Our accountant charges clients $800 to do their corporate year-end.

But since it's my father-in-law...he insists we pay him with a chinese food buffet meal.

Equitable trade.

Not so in the UK. If YOU sign off on their end accounts YOU are liable for ANY penalties.

I pay $175.00 an hour. Usually 3-4 hours per quarter. Extra three to compile and file at end of year.
